British English spell-checker in Seamonkey

Post by oorwullie »

Can't find an answer through searching but i know this has been raised before.

I've installed the British English dictionary in Seamonkey and it shows up in the add-ons manager but doesn't show as an option in either browser or composer. Also en-gb is selected in Preferences.

There's bound to be a reason for this but I can't work out why?

Any thoughts?

I was able to set the dictionary for the "spelling as you type" in Prefs -> Mail & Newsgroups -> Composition -> Spelling -> Language

Although that's in the MailNews prefs it works for me in the browser as well.

You seem to be using a trunk build. Probably you need an updated version of the en-GB dictionary. On trunk extensions are not unpacked from the XPI by default any more. Unfortunately dictionaries delivered as an XPI need to be in unpacked form to work on trunk.

Workarounds:

1. Download the XPI. Edit the install.rdf and add <em:unpack>true</em:unpack> in the appropriate location.

2. Unpack the XPI and move the .dic and .aff files to your SeaMonkey installation directory e.g. seamonkey/dictionaries/.

2a. I think with SM 2.0+ you can put the files in the profile e.g. $PROFILE$/dictionaries/ but don't quote me on this.

By the way, I am using the en-GB-oed dictionary - a variant of en-GB but using the O.E.D. spelling preferences.

@Raj. Thanks but trunk didn't give an option.

@Phil. Thanks, that did the trick.

btw I already had the oed dic in OpenOffice so added it to Seamonkey. Works a treat. (Although since retiring I don't have the same need for such linguistic precision.)

Aah! Actually a variation on #2. Placing the oed dic and aff files in the dictionary subfolder.

Oops, sorry, didn't notice that you were running a trunk build.
