The arrogance of Mozilla

Post by GB34 »

The arrogance of Mozilla has about reached the same level as Microsoft has with Windows 10. Mozilla decides to disable addons that work perfectly well because they think that we need to be protected from ourselves and because we don't have the brains to pick and choose what works best for us.

Another problem is that Firefox no longer works on all web sites. On some the page never finishes loading, on others the links to navigate the site no longer work. On these I go to Chrome and all works just fine. Edge and old Internet Explorer still seem to work as well. Except for these two points I prefer Firefox over other browsers and that is why I continue to use it.

Why Mozilla thinks that all web sites have to conform their site to work the way Mozilla wants is beyond me.

If someone wants to berate me for being ignorant and behind the times and that your installation works perfectly everywhere, go right ahead. I will ignore you.

Top Tip - To be taken seriously around here, please try to ensure that you don't have a posting history that shows that you are always on the bleedin' moan - http://forums.mozillazine.org/search.ph ... 5&sr=posts

Btw - if someone wants to berate me for anything at all, I'd like to wish you the very best of luck with that one.

Have you done any diagnostics (Safe Mode, new profile, etc.) to see if those site work better in those environments?

Dan, as a matter of fact I have. I even went so far as to delete all traces of Firefox and supporting profiles and files. Then made a new, clean installation with no carryovers from previous installations and tried to run without any add-ons, etc. Still the same result. I'm not sure but I suspect that it is Mozillas distrust of Java and Javascript that is the key to that problem as some sites do require Java to display properly. If you will do a search you find that there are a lot of people who are having the same problem of pages not completely loading that I am, so it is not a problem isolated to my system.

The revamping the add-on operations creates another problem. When I updated to 57 almost all of my add-ons that I had found very useful just disappeared. When trying to find substitutes I discovered that I needed to install another intermediate program which for some reason I've never been able to get it to work. I've been using computers since about 1985 so I consider myself somewhat computer savvy.

A prime example of Mozilla protecting us from ourselves is their treatment of the Web Of Trust add-on, saying that is is stealing our information. I suspect that most web sites profit from the sale of information they gather about us when we visit their sites. When searching, Web Of Trust at least gave you some indication as to whether a site might be hazardous to visit. Now you are completely blind with no indication of reliability. How is that an improvement? There may be one but I haven't yet found a substitute for WOT.

Finally, I reverted back to Firefox 49 where all my add-ons except WOT still work and I am relying on good anti-virus, anti-malware programs and a good firewall.

Some versions of WOT are blocked, any 20170120 and lower. But newer versions can be installed and recent reviews say it works. Also any version could be installed if you disable the blocklist if you don't like the newer versions. http://kb.mozillazine.org/Extensions.blocklist.enabled

He's never coughed up with a link in his many many years of moaning so why will he start now?

Just so you know, the Java Plugin from Oracle and the JavaScript in Firefox are two separate things. http://kb.mozillazine.org/JavaScript_is_not_Java

Besides even Oracle is in process of depreciating their vulnerable Plugin. Not only did Mozilla not allow all NPAPI Plugins to not run in Firefox except for Flash Player Plugin from Adobe since the Firefox 52.0 Release, other web browsers have dropped support of NPAPI Plugins (including Java) like Chrome (version 45+), Chromium, and Opera did back in Sept 2015. So there is little reasons for websites to still use the Java Plugin now days. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/npapi-plugins

as for why the WoT extension was added to blocklist a year ago.

from https://addons.mozilla.org/blocked/
https://addons.mozilla.org/blocked/i1523
Web of Trust 20170120 and lower has been blocked
Why was it blocked?
Versions 20170120 and lower of the Web of Trust add-on send excessive user data to its service, which has been reportedly shared with third parties without sufficient sanitization. These versions are also affected by a vulnerability that could lead to unwanted remote code execution.
I would not trust WoT past just giving you a heads up of possible concerns that is if you can accept their privacy policy.

For example it is well known that *.mozillaZine.org is a site that is not a part of nor run by Mozilla (also see right sidebar) yet many people reviewing forums.mozillazine.org on WoT over the years said it was a official Mozilla site (and one troll justinrpg tried to give the forum a negative rating and was later removed). If WOT users get this simple fact wrong then can you really trust it?. https://www.mywot.com/en/scorecard/foru ... lazine.org

Just for you doubters This Page never finishes loading:

And the links on the left hand column no longer work:
https://www.walmart.com/browse/video-games/2636

They all work just fine in Chrome:

Those of you who think I'm a chronic complainer, just do a little searching on this site and you will see that quite a few others have problems also. For some reason the cures that some try don't work for me either.

As long as I stay with the older versions of FF everything works.

Well you are a chronic complainer your posts prove that and this is a support forum people come here with problems you very rarely get people coming here to say everything works great.
Both those links work fine for me

The Walmart links require session storage: dom.storage.enabled -> true

In addition to session storage the Vanguard one also requires a Referer Header: network.http.sendRefererHeader -> 2

The Walmart one is particularly annoying because at first glance they look like normal links but there is in fact a javascript click event attached to those links.

I routinely manipulate these preferences (using add-ons) but you do need to be alert to when this causes problems.

In other words, the average user should have no problem with those links. Session Storage and Referrer Header is enabled by default.
