Cannot use link, or other functions, on ONE email source

Post by Roger Davis »

This is a very strange situation. I get occasional emails from Quora. In these emails, and ONLY these emails, I cannot use the links (place cursor over link, no finger appears, link won't work). ALSO, other functions (select, copy, etc) won't work. This began a few weeks ago.

This is true in all instances of Firefox on my computers, BOTH Ubuntu and Windows. HOWEVER, if I forward this same email to others using Firefox, the links and other functions work. If I go to the Quora site, all functions work fine on identical content.

I can't fix this with "Settings", at least with what I tried. I assume it may be caused in About:Config, since I have made some changes there, but I can't remember what they were, they were some time ago.

1) Are there any direct ideas to try, either in Settings or in About:Config ?

2) Is there any way to see ONLY changed settings in About:Config ?

3) ANY other ideas ?

Thanks!!!

we need an example of such links. in most cases the transport from mailer to firefox is broken. either mailer changes value (very possible) or firefox because of extensions. assuming firefox is doing fine when you visit the page there only could one possible solution: mailer!

which mailer is in use?

Not sure what you mean by mailer. I'm using AOL Webmail, straight to the Firefox browser, not an email program.

I've established that I have the problem in ALL my Firefox instances, two in Ubuntu on two different machines, and two in Windows on two different machines. Since these are all synced, It seems to me that the problem would be in a setting I made.

In ALL other emails, the links work fine. This is the ONLY problem I see now in Firefox, all else seems to be working well.

The problem does NOT exist on a friends Firefox on a different Windows machine, OR in different browsers on all these machines, mine or the friends. The problem still exists in Safe Mode.

I can't provide a sample since I can't copy any part of it, because that doesn't work on those emails either. None of the normal functions do. I could forward one of them to an email address. I could provide a screen shot, but can't figure out how to upload it, and I can't paste it here.

so firefox is not your problem - its the mail. i like to have a link if possible.
concerning mailer - you did not write that you are using some kind of web-mail
I get occasional emails from Quora

Do those same emails show that problem if you open them in a different browser, such as IE or Edge on the Windows system?
Have you tried starting Firefox in Mozilla Safe Mode? http://kb.mozillazine.org/Safe_mode
If no improvement using Safe Mode, do you have the same problem if you create a new profile and test it with no extensions or non-default themes installed?

For ALL other emails, the links work fine. This is the ONLY problem I see now in Firefox, all else seems to be working well, and ALL other email links work well. Therefore, this email is unique, but it works in all other Firefox but mine AND in other browsers on this machine.

The problem does NOT exist on a friends Firefox on a different Windows machine.

The problem does NOT exist in different browsers (Chrome, Chromium, etc.) on all these machines, mine or the friends.

The problem still exists in Safe Mode.

The link you gave had the instruction "users can access the Profile Manager from an open program window by selecting "Tools -> Switch Profile..." from the menu. " There is no option in Tools to switch profile. Please note this is in Ubuntu Linux.

That option is not present in Windows Firefox either and the article describes tat option in regard to the SeaMonkey suite, not Firefox.

After you've taken the screen shot/s...
Reduce it/them to around 600 x 500 or so in your favourite image editor, (Be sure to remove any personal info.)
& upload them to your favourite image hosting site.

Type about:profiles into the address bar.
Click "Create a new profile".
Click "Next".
Give it a name.
Click "Finish" and the profile will appear on the page.
Click "Launch profile in new browser".
Test the email site.

If that works then you probably have to do a refresh of all your profiles.
