Extension vs Add-on?
why can't mozilla settle on 'extension' or 'addin', instead of both terms?

Re: Extension vs Add-on?
Addons include extensions, plugins, and themes.

Re: Extension vs Add-on?
Though sometimes I wish it was still the simple way of the separate Extensions, Themes and Plugins instead of lumping them together as Addons. It can take extra work (posts) trying to figure out the cause of a problem was due to a certain Extension when the OP may just refer to them as Addons in general.

Re: Extension vs Add-on?
Before you add them, they are called "Add-ons".
After you add them, they are called "Extensions".
I'm sorry, that's just inconsistent, confusing, and idiotic.
Where it says "What are add-ons", it should say "They are extensions."

Bit free with throwing around terms like 'idiotic', aren't you? It states pretty clearly, chum, that 'Addons' is the generic term for various types of application and gives examples. What are Add-ons?
Add-ons are applications that let you personalise SeaMonkey with extra functionality or style. Try a time-saving sidebar, a weather notifier, or a themed look to make SeaMonkey your own.
Considering that Addons means more that just Extensions, then how would you have explained it better?

apologies for my use of the "i" word-- this has irritated me for years.Frank Lion wrote:Considering that Addons means more that just Extensions, then how would you have explained it better?
i would keep addins under "addins", before and after they are installed (like any non-mozilla browser i'ved used).
i would put other non-addin things under a different heading.

See what the general term Add-ons refers to at https://addons.mozilla.org/faqjohnywhy wrote:Before you add them, they are called "Add-ons".

In the many Firefox Release up till Firefox 2.0/3.0 days they were referred to separately. Then Mozilla decided to complicate things and lump the separate Extensions, Themes (complete and image), Plugins, search engines, dictionaries, language packs under the general term Add-ons.
What are you referring to as non-addons ?
Actually this might as well be locked as you bumped a rather old thread from May 2009.
