I made the mistake of downloading and installing some smileys on the recommendation of a friend. They came from SweetIM. I have read several how-to's after searching but none have worked. I did the Control Panel/ADD-REMOVE-Programs thing and it disappeared from the list; however, the crazy little monkey is still grinning at me. I think it hijacked the Google search feature, but I'm not sure of this.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Does it show up in the Addons Manager? Tools -> Addons -> Extensions.

Yes, it did; but I had looked there before and not found it. I uninstalled it and restarted Fx and it seems to be gone.

Thanks a bunch. Sometimes it's danged near impossible to see the obvious.

Odd that it was not there, then it was. At any rate, I'm glad you were able to finally kill it off!

This thing is pretty persistent. Even after removing the program and the add-on extension, the monkey still grinned at me from the icon on the left side of my search bar entry point. I finally stumbled onto (I cant' remember how I got there and can't seem to find my way back to it) a way to manage my search engines. I found that the sweetIm engine was still hanging around there; so I deleted it. No more grinning monkey.

So . . . to recap: How to Remove SweetIM
1) Use Add/Remove Programs from Control Panel in Windows to remove the program and related elements
2) In Firefox (and there is probably some equivalent unknown to me in IE) go to Tools/Add-Ons/Extensions
and uninstall the SweetIM extension
3) Go to your search engines and find Manage Search Engines then delete the SweetIm search
engine from the list.
4) In Firefox go to Tools/Options and look at the Main tab. Be sure that your home page URL has not been hijacked.

(Posted in case anyone else has the problem and finds this thread using the Search feature.)

Hey, signed up to this just to tell you how to get rid of Sweet-worse-than-aids-Im.

its really persistent and youll notice when youve uninstalled it usually the search bar is still there.

so try this:

uninstall all SweetIm stuff in Programs and Features (win 7)

in your browser, delete all SweetIm stuff from your add ons and extensions

then go into my computer

type 'regedit' into the search bar, (it looks like a blue defraged cube)

go into that, and 'find' (ctrl+f)

type 'sweet' and hit enter

it will take you straight to a reg key for SweetIm, delete it

just keep repeating, keep 'finding' 'sweet' and deleting them one by one until there is non left to find

and all the SweetIm shite will be off your pc, including that stubborn search box!

this takes about... 2 minutes?

This is the first thing ive ever posted on one of these sites so if you get confused by my poor instructions just gimme a shout.

hope you find it useful :)

A post by a new member requires post approval first before it or any others by member before approval will show. This is due to the extensive amount of spam this form can get at certain times of day.
