But have you actually tried it? Let's see, the first problem was due to a lousy "security" program, and you're not willing to see what's causing the second problem? Bye.

People have made such claims here over the years that the Firefox usage was dropping fast or it was doomed soon. I guess you are not aware of the future development like improved memory usage in Firefox 7.0 for example.

You know people post here because they think they're giving an earful to Mozilla. As if we had any control over the program.

Occasionally they can be persuaded to try our suggestions, and they find that (1) it really does work after all, and (2) often as not, their wounds were self-inflicted.

Memory usage has been Firefox's major weakness over the years. I used to have severe performance problems on my previous PC (1 Gig RAM) and I'd had disk problems for a while as well. However, other browsers were equally affected. But I had no such problems on various work PCs running Firefox. On my current PC Firefox is at 760 MB excluding the plugin-container processes. But I now have so much memory that I don't notice it. Still, I look forward to the impending memory fix when 7 (or is it 8?) hits the stable channel.

Memory usage wasn't an issue since Fx1.5. New issues happened at Fx4.0 after a ton of features were added. Major progress was made in Fx7 and continued since then.

In my experience Firefox has gobbled memory from at least v2 onwards. The first attempt at cleaning it up was in 3.x wasn't it? But I noticed no difference. Let's hope you're right with 7+.

It would be helpful if folks here led by example and didn't make utterly hypocritical statements like this one.

The guy has a legitimate concern and instead of rising above his trolling, most everyone in this thread instead chose to descend to his level.

Then he posts a rant about not wanting to use safe mode and carries on like some right wing loony and you expect us to go easy on him ? Your idea of legitimate is really not on par with ours

Then really, don't act so surprised when people start jumping ship since the community here is extremely hostile to those who aren't already devoted fanboys. I've spent time in the Chrome community as well and while they are equally as evangelical about their favorite browser, they're not extremely hostile to newcomers or to legitimate criticism.

A few things...

1. Firefox uses excessive memory compared to what browser that isn't built into the OS? I don't believe for one second that IE "reveals" all of it's memory use. Since there weren't that many other browsers around during Firefox 2.0 days... except shells of IE, I'd love to see where you draw this comparison. In my experience it's still the best mainstream browser out there in terms of memory use.

2. Every year the websites you love to use get more complex and use more memory. If you could turn back the clock and use the original Facebook, original Google, original YouTube websites I would bet cash money they would consume dramatically less memory on modern Firefox than the contemporary versions.

3. Don't even bother trying to do comparisons of modern websites on older browsers... because they simply won't render code they don't understand, or the websites themselves will deliver up simplified code.

4. When Firefox 3.0 came out with many new features it had some serious memory problems. In the successive releases of 3.5 and 3.6 that morphed into Firefox becoming a seriously stable and memory efficient program. It took 18 months for Mozilla to wrangle the 3.x era of Firefox into shape. When Firefox 4.0 came out with many new features it suffered from serious memory problems as well. In each subsequent release we've seen improvements, and it's only been 6 months so far... in 18 months who knows?

People who want to compare Firefox to Chrome should be encouraged to remove all of their extensions and reset all of their user settings back to factory defaults. When Firefox is "broken" 99 times in 100 it's because the user did it themselves or the extension they invited in did it for them.

The ship flying the Firefox flag?

Maybe people here don't spend a lot of time on other tech sites, but the answer to both of these questions is plainly obvious if you do. People complain on Ars, CNet, The Register, and numerous other sites about how people here on these forums are rude and abusive and that factored heavily into their decisions to switch browsers. Not just to Chrome either, but basically to anything not-Firefox.

Evangelical as in "I love my browser to death, and so should you, here's why." Nothing really special about that, it's just that for whatever reason the hostility index here is orders of magnitude higher than elsewhere.
