Very good !

I also thought about 'Morilla', but that's too offensive towards Mozilla.....

I, for one, am tired of *Zilla names. Mozilla is fine, but can't we make a Mozilla based browser without calling it *Zilla?

I would also like to second the thoughts expressed here in that the new name should be:
1) Easily pronounceable (this might be a problem across different languages...)
2) Not stupid sounding (so I can recommend it to my friends/family)

Where Mozilla is sometimes referred to as 'Moz', one may call the new Phoenix 'Feen' ?

(Stupid sounding, perhaps)

Ok, let's see. Not *Zilla, easily pronounceable, no stupid sounding... The name that best matches your criteria is: SpermZilla! ;)

(I must be on crack today.)

Frankly, I think most names are going to be taken already by someone for something (that's the problem with the internet -- it puts too many people together in the same place...) So I hope you get to keep Phoenix -- I had a look at the complaining company's web site, and there was nothing apparent in their product descriptions that conflicted with a web browser -- it sounds like a completely unfounded action.

Having said that, Raptor sounds pretty decent as a replacement.

Medusa and Hydra occurred to me (for the tabbed interface, of course...) (of those two, Medusa sounds best, IMO. I realise the name has some negative connotations, but it's a cool name so I can't imagine anyone being put off based on that :)

That made me do a quick hunt for other such creatures...

CERBERUS - "Cerberus was the dread hound of Hades in the Underworld. Cerberus was a many headed dog with a mane and tail of snakes. His job was to devour any souls trying to escsape from the underworld. He is said to have razor sharp teeth and dripped venom from his fangs."

SCYLLA - "In Greek mythology Scylla was a monster with six heads and twelve feet."

TYPHON - "The Typhon was a hundred headed winged monster. He was the son of Gaia and Tartartus. His body ends in a snake tail and his mouth blazes fire."

The Typhon description is quite apt, but doesn't really sound so good. Also, I'm not sure any of those three really fit the requirement for a word that everyone will be reasonably familiar with and know how to spell :/

Another name I quite liked was "Inferno", but that might conflict with...
http://www.vitanuova.com/inferno/
"Distributed application development across operating systems and architectures."
(That's more of a conflict/potential confusion with Mozilla than it is with Phoenix, but possibly something to avoid never the less...)

3) Short enough (not more than three syllables).

Guerilla... Che? Or Guevara?

Oh, and another lizardy one (well, in appearance at least!) that sounds alright (but is admittedly a bit of a mismatch as far as the description goes :) is Tuatara.

I really like:

1. Phoenix
2. Raptor
3. Guerilla (...although this violates "Easy to spell"...)

Cerberus goes quite nicely too -- Chimera and Cerberus were siblings
