Google Search in Menu Bar

Post by anexian »

I dont know how difficult this would be, I've always hated how much space is wasted in the Menu Bar.

Or the option to move it there.

Here add this to your prefs.js:

user_pref("keyword.URL","http://www.google.com/search?q=")

then just type what you want in your address bar and it will do a Google search

The URL bar already does Google Search, but it's an I Feel Lucky.

I discovered recently that while in View->Toolbars->Customize you can actually drag almost anything onto the menu bar. I have my URl bar and bookmarks toolbar on there and a double width search bar on the main toolbar with the normal icons. All works very well and uses that wasted space that always grieves me on any program's menu bar. Excellent customisation feature.

I like it! I put everything on the menubar and it fits nicely. I'm using little
phoenix for a theme. Nothing like saving a little vertical space. In this case, a
lot of vertical space. I don't use a bookmarks toolbar either.

I too love the customizable toolbar, but back to the issue of Google: I'd recommend making the Google search the default behaviour for searches typed in the address bar. Almost no one likes the I'm feeling Lucky" behaviour.

Include me as one of those who prefers the current behavior. The I Feel Lucky behavior is great for when you want to hit a company website; works 95% of the time for me.

For a regular Google search, you can put the word 'google' before your entry on the toolbar. See the QuickSearch folder that Phoenix sets up for more information, but you can have many many options for fast searching of almost anything. I have a dictionary, a theosaururs, Google's new Froogle shopbot, etc. And 'google' was too much to type, so I easily changed it to 'g' by editing the keyword under bookmarks.

Great! I didnt know that. Whenever I click on "customize" nothing happens. It crashes the app, or it hangs for hours....?
