WOT gets reenabled on Firefox

Post by SeahawksXLVIII »

Yesterday, Web of Trust started being reenabled on all my browsers. The once blocked addon is getting reenabled on Firefox.

Apparently Firefox changes their mind on the addon or MyWOT got their shit together.

Post your thoughts and experiences with the new WOT (May 2017) here.

WOT old/new is essentially useless. It is based on the "opinions" of users rather than vetted information from experts.

Actually it is not being re-enabled in Firefox but you were updated to a version that was found to be acceptable enough in guidelines in review. https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/Add ... cy/Reviews

From the Bug#1314332 (for reading only) for the version 20170120 and older on addons.mozilla.org/blocked/
Once a new version of your add-on Extension passes review, users will be updated to it and the block won't apply anymore. Current users who are okay with the risks can re-enable the add-on Extension in the Add-ons Manager.
Since the current 20170206 version passed review people who still had WOT installed were updated to new version if Extension updates were allowed. The 20170120 and older versions are still on blocklist.

The desktop web browser for Windows, Mac OSX, and Linux we have know as Firefox since 0.8 Release (was Phoenix, Firebird before) is made by Mozilla so the Firefox web browser did not do anything.

I agree that this WOT extension is not as useful or as accurate as people may think. For example it is well known that *.mozillaZine.org is a site that is not a part of nor run by Mozilla yet may people reviewing forums.mozillazine.org over the years said it was official (and one troll justinrpg tried to give the forum a negative rating and was removed). If WOT users get this simple fact wrong then can you really trust it?. https://www.mywot.com/en/scorecard/foru ... lazine.org

Agree that it's not to be relied on (Virus Total much better, but obviously not as convenient), but it has its uses, especially for opinions re. retail sites. Mozilla has apparently reviewed it, and now found it OK, at least for AMO review purposes. I'm not a lawyer and perhaps the Privacy Policy boilerplate is standard, but it seems there could be a number of places to drive two or three trucks through. And not sure I would trust the opt-out provisions. So, once bitten twice shy.
By installing the WOT Extension you hereby consent to our Privacy Policy and to our collection, storage, use and share of your Personal Information and Non-Personal Information (as defined below). IF YOU DO NOT ACCEPT THE TERM OF OUR PRIVACY POLICY, PLEASE DO NOT ACCESS OR USE THE WOT PRODUCTS OR WOT SERVICES. We may, from time to time, change our Privacy Policy. We encourage you to review our Privacy Policy frequently to be kept informed of any updates....

• In the event of a corporate transaction (e.g. the sale of a substantial part of our business, or a merger or consolidation with another legal entity).
• With current or future contractors, affiliates or subsidiaries for research, analytics, and other purposes consistent with our Privacy Policy.
Your Non-Personal Information may be included as part of data products that we license to certain businesses for research, analytics and related purposes. Such data products will only include Non-Personal Information, and will not be licensed or shared with any third parties for the purposes of direct marketing or for any purpose involving the tracking, identifying or targeting of individual users. To exercise that right, please contact us at: support@mywot.com. Even after providing your consent to our Privacy Policy, you are entitled to change your mind. If you do, you may opt out of the data collection and sharing process related to your WOT Extension by changing the options selected in the “Settings” menu, so that the “Real-time Protection” option is set to “Off”.
