(Just what Plugins are you using?)

Anyhow (I'm mostly confused, in general & by this thread, but) if you want FF x64, download that & install it.
If you want SeaMonkey x64 (for Windows) - you'll have to get it from some place like akalla's page, download & install it.

Backup first.

It should "just work" (in most cases).

Plugins, for a 64-bit browser, would require 64-bit Plugins.
(Flash already has both, if installed on a 64-bit OS. Others, don't know?)
Thanks. Maybe I'm just gunshy after getting burned trying this stuff out earlier. Maybe they have it more squared away now.

I was hoping it would automatically install the 64 bit version at some point. When you say "download that & install it", do we install it OVER the current 32 bit, or uninstall and re-install the new one? What about if we're using the 32 bit "BETA" version? Same/same? Thanks again.

one of the previous answers was "uninstall first then re-install"

/me is using both on same profile, also across my network, and no problems.

but you should be aware of using betas or nightly - use on separate profiles, not on the default for firefox final (current 54).
v55 or v56 will separate favicons from places and there is no turn back when jumping back to an older firefox version. favicons are gone.

Well, I took the leap after all on Firefox. I found and downloaded Firefox 64 bit 55 beta 3 (same version level as the 32 bit I had).

As far as Flash goes, out of luck I think:
Windows with other browsers, such as Firefox, Google Chrome, or Opera To use Firefox or other (not Internet Explorer) browsers with Shockwave Player on your 64-bit system, do the following: Download the 32-bit version from the browser vendor's website. For example, Firefox is a 32-bit Web browser you can download from http://www.mozilla.org/firefox. While using the 32-bit version of your Web browser, go to: http://get.adobe.com/shockwave (the Shockwave Player Download Center). The download center installs Shockwave Player in your 32-bit Web browser. You are now ready to view content using Shockwave Player in your 32-bit browser. Note: Make sure you go to the Shockwave Player Download center in your 32-bit browser. If you try to go to the download center using a 64-bit Web browser, you will see a message from Adobe and a link back to this page, because you cannot install the current 32-bit Shockwave Player in your 64-bit Web browser.

I guess I will just switch to Chrome or IE to view pages with Flash.

The Flash Player (old name Shockwave Flash) and the Shockwave for director Player you linked to are two very different Plugins. The Shockwave for director Player is not used much now days except for maybe some sites that support it for some games or education applications.

The Flash Player is at
https://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/
https://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/otherversions/

You can check your Flash Player version at http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/about/

glad i have left flash on my systems. no flash makes websites in most cases ad-free/flicker-free. i dont care this dying technologie. and hopefulle chromium dont contain flash like the crap chrome.

not sure what issues yoiu have with firefox x64 and flash but all trouble is caused by flash and not firefox, you should remember this.

but i can tell you that the (shockwave) flash installer contains x86 AND x64 version and on 64-bit systems both are installed.
"shockwave player" is a complete different software and based on macromedia director, not macromedia flash.

Thanks. I went on google, and looked up flash player test, or something like that. Why wouldn't they point people to the right one I wonder.

That last one in red is the one I meant. It used to go to that link.

All seems to be working now.

Thank you.

Java just did an update. Now I have this:
Verify Java Version We have detected you are using the 64-bit version of Firefox which will not run the Java plugin. Use the Java Control Panel to find the installed Java version. More info https://java.com/en/download/installed8.jsp

Firefox Releases since 52.0 has only allowed the Flash Player Plugin to run whether on Windows, Mac OSX or Linux.

Besides no Release of Win64 Firefox has allowed the Java Plugin to run (since Win64 existed as of Fx 42.0 Release) as you needed the 32-bit Firefox and 32-bit Java on Windows before. You can use the 32-bit Firefox 52 ESR from https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/organizations/all/ in order to use other Plugins like before.

Is there such a thing? If so, why wouldn't Java suggest using this?

Sure if the OP was using Firefox 51.0 Release or earlier or the 52.0 ESR on 64-bit Linux or Mac OSX.

The Win64 Firefox started as of Fx 42.0 and only the 64-bit Flash Player was allowed to run. The Win64 Firefox 43.0 to 51.0 Releases (and Fx 52 ESR) only allowed the 64-bit Flash Player and Silverlight Plugins to run and no other including Java.

The only way Windows users have been able to use the Java Plugin from Oracle was with 32-bit Firefox and 32-bit Java Plugin (whether they have 32-bit or 64-bit Windows) which Windows users can still do if they use the 32-bit Fx 52 ESR builds.

https://support.mozilla.org/kb/npapi-plugins
Important: The Windows 64-bit version of Firefox 52 ESR only supports the Adobe Flash and Microsoft Silverlight plugins. If you also need support for Java or other plugins, choose the Windows (32-bit) download.

Aha. Now I know why I was running the 32 bit version of Firefox. Is it possible to go back to that version using the same profile? Do I just uninstall the 64 and install the 32 in its place?

Why can't things just be simple?

normally the profile dont care about bits.

because _you_ make it such complicated. anyone else would do two steps:
- uninstall 32bit
- install 64bit
*happy*

btw you were forced somehow to x64 in the near future:

If you really want to run the Java Plugin in Firefox then you need 32-bit Firefox 52 ESR. However if you do not need to use the Java Plugin then you can use the 32-bit or 64-bit (Win64) Firefox Release.

Note the Firefox 55 you have is on Beta channel and not Release.
