New version not unistalling the previous ?

Post by cowboy »

Just downloaded 57.03.. everything when well, fired it up OK

I noticed that it didn't override/remove my previous version, 52 I believe, if memory serves me
correctly, FF used to do that right ??

Could that be a 32-bit vs 64-bit issue?
Or could that 52 version be the ESR 52 version?

With Windows 64-bit OS's Firefox 32-bit was the default until about a year ago; now Firefox 64-bit is what Mozilla will automatically supply, and a few versions ago would have "updated" to the 64-bit version (after 52, but before 57 - like 54 or 55, iirc - so with having 52 and going directly to 57 you would have missed that "update event" quite probably).

As of Firefox 57 there has been much confusion about whether Firefox 57 64-bit will install beside the 32-bit version or replace it; and also whether it will install in Program Files or Program Files (86). Then mention has been made about Win10 vs Win7 and maybe Win8.1 all acting different as to which PF folder is used. And finally, the Windows Registry still seems to have a nasty habit (going back to the days of WinXP) of showing two separate versions of Firefox as being installed when only one version can be found when searching the hard drive for the 2nd version; then when the user uninstalls the 2nd / older version listed in the Control Panel they find they don't have any version installed - the 2nd version was a phantom that was "stuck" in the Registry values.
A mind is a terrible thing to waste. Mine has wandered off and I'm out looking for it.

You can always un-install the old/er version, but you will probably lose both.
Just re-install v57 if that happens.
Your Profile will remain intact.

AFAIK,
If you un-install the old version & lose both, when you D/L & install the latest version,
you have the choice of which one you want on the site.

I believe that anyone running Firefox 32 bit on a 64 bit system will be automatically updated to that 64 bit version.

Hi,
Just use the "normal" Windows un-install procedure.

Reboot afterwards.
