Pocket - where's the opt in or out????

Post by Grumpus »

There appears to be no mention of whether you can accept or not the sponsored content, if someone knows of it please post?
The alternative is Removing Pocket and disabling:
Recommend once an update has occurred go immediately off-line.
Do not allow any outside connections until editing is completed.

You need to find the install file (with Linux .xpi) and then search through about:config to find the pocket related items, Mac may be different.
There may be something deeper in the code but having removed the install file and closing off the items in about:config and also making it "untrusted" in NoScript or adding the filter to uBlock should do the trick.
Current (Firefox 59.0.2) about:config items - browser.pocket.api; browser.pocket.enabledLocales; browser.pocket.oAuthConsumerKey; browser.pocket.site; browser.pocket.useLocaleList;
browser.toolbarbuttons.introduced.pocket-button; extensions.pocket.enabled.
Note: the filters may help with uBlock or some other list based filter set.

Another reason to dump Pocket - Sponsored Content

I thought it was just best to disable it? No easy way to do that though, is what I'm getting from your post.

Disable 'Pocket' - about:config > extensions.pocket.enabled > false > you're done.

The following list is pretty effective in getting rid of Mozilla's data mining aka 'telemetry' and other tracking type stuff -

@tomatoshadow - it's a lot easier than it looks. Frank's right but I still like to drive a stake in it's heart and blank urls, etc.
There's a lot of folks don't like to mess with about:config but it makes sense to try and understand and familiarize yourself with it.
