What video downloader is the safest?

Post by Matty3 »

Is there any downloader that is safest to download videos?

All the extensions that I see have this Permission required - Access your data for all websites

Now this is not safe, because as per Mozilla knowledgebase article about Permissions, what it means is it can also read your passwords.

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/pe ... extensions

A lot of people have no idea about this and likely do not bother learning more, but it seems risky to me anyhow. :(

This is not part of Firefox, it is just an open source program you run to download videos from youtube and a few other sites. https://rg3.github.io/youtube-dl/

See if this site suits your needs: https://qdownloader.net/youtube-video-downloader

Doesn't require installing to Firefox. Doesn't require anything but the address of the vid you want to download. I occasionally use it for Youtube vids but I think it can download from other sites too.

Hi,
Take a look at what Brian (Britec09) posted on his YT channel re; VLC player.
It requires a tad of "clicking/copying/pasting etc" but it does work.
No installation in Firefox though & no info required or to be collected.

If you have it installed, VLC can download videos.

How would I download with VLC? I've been using outside downloaders.

Watch the video that Limpet235 points to. I tried it. I it works with some but not all Youtube videos. The link I posted above is the same, works with some but not all Youtube videos.

Thanks, will try it. Would the exceptions be the ones that are copyright-protected? Of course I wouldn't dream of downloading those.

I would suspect that to be the case but I can't say for sure. Best thing to do is just experiment and see what does/doesn't work.

Like I said, I only occasionally download from Youtube and the videos I download aren't copyright protected - so the link I posted suits all my needs.

My first 3 won't download on VLC, and it says to check the log. I tried looking here to see where the log might be

Too much work

I moved on to qdownloader.net, and it was downloaded instantly.
Thanks to both of you. :D

As it's OT, I'll ask my next question as a new thread.

Yeah, that's what I thought as well, Foxy. Life is too short for the struggle, just use what works to suit your needs.

Really? It took me a few minutes to figure out how to DL with VLC, Well, maybe more than a few. :D And If I ever have to use it again, I'll have to relearn the process (but it won't take quite as long). Convenience is exactly why Winders and Mac have everyone by the short curlies. Freedom takes effort and is not easily won. It starts with the choices we make and the tools we use.
