Somebody's reversed the order of files in a folder!

Post by Ray Bell »

I am preparing my next entry to a thread on a forum, this thread now has over 260 posts and contains over 4,000 images which I upload via Postimage.

It's easy. I prepare the pictures, file them in the order in which I want to use them, upload them and prepare the post in Word having put the image codes etc onto that page. I use about 25 images per post, so it's great that I can just work around them on the page as I write the story to fit the images.

Last night my computer suffered a Windows automatic update and I suspect that has changed something. Tonight I tried to upload images and found that the order of the files in the window from which I upload had been changed from descending to ascending. To use them this way would create a lot of difficulty.

I believe it's possible that the update has caused this. There is no option to change the order of the images in the window which opens when I click on 'upload'. I even tried changing the order in the folder whence the images come from, quite easily achieved, but it made no difference to the upload window.

Has anyone got any ideas?

If the file loader has columns at the top, try clicking on the one you want to reverse.

Here are the options I have, none of these make a difference...

I have overcome it by transferring all the files to a fresh folder, but I'd still like to get to the bottom of the problem.

No, sorry, that's not right...

That's the folder view, the upload window shows this in reverse order. It has never happened before or since, just the files from this folder.

There appear to be no options at all on the upload window.

Sorry, I thought I made it plain that they are in the correct order in the file folder, and that I know how to change that...

It's only when I go to upload from that one file folder (none of the other file folders) that the order is reversed.

Maybe you can reset folders in folder options.

But the problem isn't in the folder containing the files...

It's in the upload system. A window which opens for me to select files to upload. There are no options with it beyond finding files.

I'm testing on the following page using the "Browse" button to open the "File Upload" window.

Grumpus' solution would work for me.

I guess your page doesn't open the standard upload window.

i.e. <input type="file">

@morat - could it be the selection of the loader to use in Firefox? I forget the item in about:config?
Also if the files are dated could it be selecting the last in /accessed first?

@Grumpus

I'm not sure.

I never heard of a Firefox preference or a Windows setting that cripples the standard upload window.

Well, it's clear that it's just that one folder which has the problem...

The folder itself does everything right, but uploading from it is the problem. I've now transferred the files to another folder and no further problems!

Thanks for your advice, friends...

The sort order of a directory may be retained.
So you may have your photo directory sorted in Name order.

Likewise, & separately, the sort order a (Windows 10?) 'File Upload' dialog may also be retained (& sorted differently from the directory listing itself).

So if your directory is "in order", your upload dialog may not necessarily be (in order).
Check the 'File Upload' dialog & see if the files are shown in your wanted order.

(If that is the case, change the ordering in your 'File Upload' dialog & you should be good.)
Fire 750, bring back 250.

I don't know how to say this without seeming to be either stupid or arrogant...

I have explained that it was the files from one folder only which did this. When moved, without renaming, to another folder, it didn't happen.

Does that get through?

Sure. How about the suggestion you got above, to just click in the "Name" column of the file picker dialog, which is
a modified Explorer window. Did that get through? Did not see your answer. That's what Firefox on Windows would normally open
whenever file/s need to be selected for any number of reasons. If you have something non-standard going on, a screenshot
would be the thing to post here (as a link to some image repository on the Web).

Note to Mods: I do not see a Firefox issue in this thread, perhaps it should be moved to MozillaZine Tech?
