Where did you hear about Phoenix?
These are not so much questions for old "Mozilla veterans" like myself but for the Mozilla newbies, the former Opera and IE users:

started with mozilla for me... too many features... before that it was strictly IE... which I have only used 3-4 times since making the switch in November... I think this browser is the best... hands down... now if only that mail client would come out... I like using the Bat! but if the mail client is anything like Phoenix then I might be switching...

- i first heard about phoenix from my bf, who heard about it on neowin and techtv.
- promised features? bf told me it was like ie. that was honestly the only reason i tried it.
- it's my default browser now because i can do almost anything i want with it, it supports w3c standards, it's not bloated, and it loads web pages fine except <img> tags.... (sorry, ot.)
my bf told me about mozilla first, so i tried that out of simple curiosity. he had been using for a while by this point. it sucked. i hated it. then the next day or so, he mentioned phoenix and i said nty i don't want another browser like mozilla. he said this one was much more like ie. that was enough for me to dl it and try it. i've been using phoenix ever since the people on the old forums told me how to fix (most of) the things that annoyed me as a converted ie user, though there are some days when i think about going back. fortunately, those times don't last (too) long. ie does some things very very well, and i think phoenix could benefit from some of those things. anyway.

I had been using Mozilla and Opera (and occationally IE) for a couple of years, before that IE and NS (only been online since -99 but that's probably off topic). I found Phoenix since I used to come to mozilla.org every couple of days to download a new Mozilla, it got downloaded because I liked the idea of a standalone Mozilla. Maybe I've been using Mozilla too long (don't remember exactly how long, since 0.8 maybe) to be called a newbie but I certainly don't feel like a veteran.
Why do I use it? It's small, fast, only a browser (have used the Mozilla mail-client from time to time but none of the other built-ins), <b>has excellent support for webstandards</b>, is great at blocking ads and popups and is free. Those are the ones I can think of right now. Oh, and it is my default browser, has been since it let me import my bookmarks because it wouldn't at first, but that feels like a long time ago.

I saw the name Phoenix mentioned in one of the Netscape newsgroups, the Communicator group I think, less than a month ago.
I didn't intend to replace Communicator 4.79, but I was ready to finally take a look at one of the new Mozilla-based browsers. Any one. I just sort of picked Phoenix randomly from among the smaller downloads, it could have just as easily been Netscape Streamline, Netscape Compact, or K-Meleon.
I'm keeping 4.79 for mail and news, but rarely use the browser now. IE hasn't seen use more than half a dozen times in the last few years, and I didn't realize how poorly my 4.79 was doing these days. In addition to handling many sites so much better, the tabs, customizable toolbars, and Pinball theme have really won me over.

Mozilla.org news section
[*]What were the (promised) features that made you try it?
Lower resources.
Looking for extendability, eg true full screen, user defined keystrokes.
(I wanted an Opera replacement after a lot of problems with Opera 6.x stability and then with Kmeleon stabilty problems. I used Mozilla for some time but tried Phoenix with its promise of lower resources.)
[*]What are the features that make it your default browser now, if it is?
Fast, light, opensource, better website compatability than Opera 5.x (YMMV), I can use the same browser on Linux at home and Windows at work, supports low impact theme (Little Mozilla/Phoenix).
So I am happier with Phoenix even before it hits the magic 1.0

1) MozillaZine, I think. I use Phoenix since the very first build.
2) Mainly the fact of being "just a browser". And the customizable toolbar.
3) Speed, low memory usage, security.
I never used IE too much. I was a Netscape user since v1.0. With 4.7, lots and lots of problems, but I always refused to replace it with IE. And Netscape 6.0 and early Mozillas were unusable. But Mozilla 0.9.4 made me drop N forever.
Then I heard about Phoenix. My dream of "just a browser", without all that bells and whistles from Netscape and Mozilla, was going to become true. Now I use mostly Phoenix, but I still have Mozilla (1.2.1) installed. And there are still two or three sites that only work well with IE.

Where I heard about Phoenix
There is a hideous web site at http://www.discoveryproduction.com that insists on exploding my IE browser window bigger than my screen! When I emailed the site's designer, he told me that was happening because I use an 800 x 600 screen resolution instead of the 1024 x 768 he expects the whole world to use.
There is another site--I forget where now--that lists a "hall of shame" for bad web design. When I nominated discoveryproduction.com, I got back a reply suggesting that I take a look at the Mozilla family of browsers which, among other things, allow me to prohibit resizing.
That's the feature that got me hooked on Phoenix.
There are certain file-sharing sites that make some money by promoting porn sites. If you visit some of those file-sharing sites with IE, pretty soon you'll have a dozen browser windows open on porn sites. Having to close them all is annoying, and they often don't stay closed. And finding the specific file I want is like looking for a needle in a haystack.
When I visit the same file-sharing sites with Phoenix, I get what I'm looking for, and no porn sites.
When I'm filling in a big text area like this in IE, if I accidentally press the Escape key, everything I have written is wiped out. That does not happen with Phoenix.
The "tabbed browser extension" is nice to have. Even without it, the basic Phoenix function allowing me to open any page in a new tab is very handy.

I used Mozilla since 0.9. I liked it, but I didn't need all that overload (mail, IRC, ...)
Then I saw at www.heise.de, that the Version 0.3 of Phoenix was released. (They said, that there the overload would be reduced AND the popup-function would be smarter, than by Mozilla). So I gave it a try and stayed with it.

I read about it on the Bits and Bytes forum from Lockergnome.
Phoenix 0.4 is out or something like that.
I've never used Mozilla, I've used Opera in the past, but not very long.
Since switching to Phoenix I've started IE three times (don't need it for banking), and a couple of times to test something that I read on this forum, but they don't count...
I download and try every nightly.
I especially like the tabbed browsing (not tried TBE yet), popup blocker and the ability to theme.
At work I have to use IE because MS Proxy 2.0 is running (thanks Laszlo for the info in some thread!),
but as soon as we get ADSL and a Linux proxy/firewall I'll make everybody use Phoenix.

I guess I'm old...
Been testing Moz since pre-M16 or so (can't remember exactly).
Been using Moz almost exclusively* for browsing for a few years.
Heard about Phoenix via MozillaZine and blogs when it was still called Mozilla/Browser.
Used the first publically available Phoenix that Asa linked to in his blog.
Stopped using Mozilla for browsing; switched to Phoenix.
Customizable toolbars is _the_ feature that made me try Phoenix. That, along with faster/smaller browser made me stay.
* I still have to use IE for a few (and getting fewer) web sites that I need to use, most notably my home equity loan account. :-} Maybe I should actually file a Tech Evang bug and send a note to the webmaster... [edit] I guess the signup was the only thing that didn't work; viewing information seems to be fine[/edit]

1. I've heard of Mozilla from Lockergnome newsletter (www.lockergnome.com) -- great newsletter for computer curious but not too geeky.
Then from Mozilla I have discovered Phoenix.. since version 0.2 or maybe even earlier..
2. I always wanted a browser.. not a browser+irc+email client+rubbish..
I used to love Opera.. the OLD one, but then he started to grow... and hasn't stopped yet!
Phoenix is quick and sleek, without any unnecessary stuff (hope that it will keep on the diet )
3. As said before.. I am only missing the multiple windows as Opera.. and posted a subject about that...
Looking forward the next release and the email client (stand alone, please)!!
