That's great, so people can associate it with GoZilla and spyware :( I really hope that's not it.

Of course it's not it. No one in these forums knows the real name.

Does that mean the new name has been decided upon? If so, when will they announce it?

No one knows that either. ;)

The shutting down of the name thread has nothing to do with them picking a name. It's not like they actually read all those pages. They had better not release a milestone based on the current nightlies since there are suddenly a lot of problems on the Mozilla tree.

I'm sure you're right. But why was the thread shut down?

My guess is that it was offtopic up the wazoo and a forum admin tired of seeing it. Maybe they'll be kind enough to open it again.

We need something special. Better up, something that has with Phoenix to do, like:
1. PYRE (A the end of an epoch, as the Phoenix feels death drawing near, it builds a funeral pyre of sweet spices)

2. BENNU
(pheonix's Egyptian counterpart is the bennu, a heron-like bird that lived on an obelisk in Heliopolis)

Both of these are way cool, short, easily remembered names.

Pyre looks cool. ;)
Why would you even consider to use the OS that is older and more obsolete than your computer?
See, that's just one of the reasons why I pick Linux.

This is funny, because it seems like this thread is becoming another "how about this name" thread ;)

Maybe they could move the new name thread to AfterDark and unlock it there?

That would make everyone happy I suppose, otherwise were going to have people proposing new names in random threads.

Announcing the new name couldn't hurt either. :D

Yeah, those are Ok. In my city there's a radio station called "Bob FM" or just "Bob", and they're running a pretty effective ad campaign. I kinda like the George idea, except there was a lame magazine called George a few years ago (or is it still around?)

I say we call it Jesus.

Hmm. Jesus and Phoenix. There are similarities, what with rising from the dead and all. And I suspect the man himself would have thought it was hilarious, and approved. But there are throughout the world--not only in the US--people who take their religion seriously enough that they would be repelled by the name. Nice thinking outside the "box", though.

Wauw there's a lot of opinions about the new name for Phoenix, and a lot of noise in the debate.

Guess a standard forum app lacks some features in giving a good overview of the proposed new names. I sense a need for a NameStorming Web app to handle that task.

And of course I'm writing because I also have some suggestions I hope will get to the ears of the people in power.

My 2 exotic suggestions are both from the Norse Mythologi:

Gefyon: fertility goddess who was sent to Sweden by Odin where she got 4 sons with a giant. She turned the sons into ox's and created Zealand by plowing soil from Sweden and leaving the big lake Vänern.

Gefyon Fountain in Copenhagen showing Gefyon plowing with the four Ox's that used to be her sons

Baldur: the god of innocence, beauty, joy, purity and peace. Second son of Odin.

And heres 2 more likely suggestions:

Websurfer: simply tells what you do with it in a nutshell...

Zurfer: also simple and with a twist...

And my thanks to the Dev team / Project owners for taking the good things from the Mozilla Project and making it better.
