Considering the amount of suggestions for Egyptian, Nordic, Hindi et. al. deities, why not good ol' J.C. himself?
Well just because it is dangerous to invoke this name in vain, or not.
good deities, for software name, are dead deities, meaning with no actual church or temple.
I think there's a lot of dangerous thing to invoke in this world, anyway.
It was a joke (ok, a real bad one)
I don't want to go to hell.
Well - as_you_said_it_bad_joke - but not so bad question
Why avoid, or not, to step on one cultural environment ?
I didn't mean it as a joke, more as a silly idea... but glad it got so much attention. Think of "Jesus" as just a name, it's common in some countries, pronounced "Hay-zoos". Like that guy in The Big Lebowski.
Hope my sacrilege didn't offend people too much. It was just a flippant comment.

I'd edit it so that it wasn't leeching from newsaskew.com and didn't break the tables...
To the cast and crew of Arrested Development: Thanks for the many great laughs.

I second the motion.
That or have newsaskew change it to say Jesus loves you, everyone else thinks you're a ****.
(from a movie or something and meant in jest)

Funny, but relatively benign compared to what I've seen other sites do.

Nice. Not half as evil as what somethingawful.com does... but that's another matter. Deuceofclubs appears to be a lot classier about it.
(What? Me posting in the gigantic name thread? Never!)
As long as I'm here, it would be mildly amusing if they chose Capricorn for the brand-new name. I doubt anybody will get that, but if you do, I love you.

Explorer
Navigator
Konqueror
and now Safari
- I'm for the idea of using a standard browser-type name.
It'd then have a bit of a connection between the name and being a browser.
Any Suggestions?
here's a few random ones thanks to thesaurus.com
adventurer
scout (- not bad)
traveller
wanderer
expedition (- not bad)
fugitive
caravan (eh? well it came up under "safari")

Jesus
"Jesus" ? Would you be forgetting the underground, subversive aspect of Phoenix ?
I would rather say :
- Minaret (a nice name understood in many languages, and reminds of the lighthouse used in some Netscape graphics)
- Djihad (against bad browsers)
- Saddam (no comment )
Also I find Paradigm very good.

Yay... a reference to The Big Lebowski, such a fun movie.
Why not rename Phoenix to the Dude
While were at it, is there any progress on the whole name changing schtick? Or even if the next update is being held back due to the name passing through legal (sort of like Chimera/Camino)?
I'm curious because even though Chimera 0.7 was delayed for a very long time you were still given some sort of status to latch on to (It'll be out once Chimera's name is changed... it'll be out once Camino passes through legal etc...), the Phoenix dev's on the other hand haven't given their users any idea of when things might possibly be done or even why there is such a delay in the first place.
