Site not working (TireRack)

Post by ck42 »

If anyone is familiar with TireRack's feature that allows you to choose a car and then pick different wheels to put on the car.....well, you know what I'm talking abou then.

Anyway, the wheel selection doesn't appear. I even went as far as allowing popups if that even matters.
Here's an example link:

It works perfectly fine in IE6.

WHat do I need to do or enable to make this work?

btw...using Win2k SP3 and 11-11 nightly build.

Page Issues

Post by Kommet »

I looked over the page and saw the same "issue" in a recent Mozilla nightly (meaning this isn't actually Phoenix-related), but when I ran the site through an <a href="http://validator.w3.org/">HTML validator</a> it came up with a major error: no DOCTYPE declared.

Without this DOCTYPE declaration Mozilla (and Phoenix) renders the page in Quirks mode, as outlined <a href="http://www.mozilla.org/docs/web-developer/quirks/doctypes.html">here</a>. I tried forcing the DOCTYPE to "HTML 4.01 Transitional" and to "HTML 3.2" (just for giggles) and the site would still not validate as either HTML type, meaning that they are using proprietary tag properties.

The fact that the page works in IE6 is NOT proof that the page is coded correctly, although this is a common assumption to make. It is obviously a bad page, and bad page is not Mozilla's problem, it is an evangelism issue.

What you need to do to fix the problem is to contact the site owner (which their <a href="http://www.tirerack.com/about/contact.html">Contact Us</a> page lists as the <a href="mailto:webmaster@tirerack.com">Webmaster</a>) and politely explain the issue. Tell them that you like their products but that you cannot use your favorite, standards-compliant web browser because the page code is broken.

Check the <a href="http://www.mozilla.org/projects/tech-evangelism/">Mozilla Evangelism</a> site for a list of things you can do to get involved. Specifically, the <a href="http://www.mozilla.org/projects/tech-evangelism/site/">Site Evangelism</a> area and its <a href="http://www.mozilla.org/projects/tech-evangelism/site/resources.html">Resources</a> page contain helpful letter examples and references you can point the Webmaster to so they can learn about the standards and how to implement them.

Kommet...thnx for the thorough explanation.
Also, I don't assume a site working with IE means it's a compliant page....I was just curious if I had not set something up properly with PX.

I'll fire off a msg to the webmaster.
thnx again!

Sorry about that.

The "don't assume IE==Standard" bit was triggered by reading about 20 threads of people saying "This browser is great! Now, if it was exactly like IE in (blank) I would use it!"

I'm getting a little tired of that. ;-)
