To answer a few people's question on the INSTALLLEVEL.

You need to first do an 'administrative install', use the /a switch to install to a network directory. From there, you can tell a GPO to use that install.

for example.
msiexec /a Firefox.msi INSTALLLEVEL=1000

Where are you seeing this new option? I have 1200 pc's and 300 users, being able to setup roaming type profiles for firefox and thunderbird are a must have. I have a share called Firefox_Profiles on a network drive that gets mapped as P: when a user logs in.

I am trying to do a rollout of Firefox across a large number of XP desktops. The issue I have is that as well as installing Firefox, I also want to pre-set a large number of configuration options, and also install a number of extensions.

I have tried three software packages to enable me to do this: InstallRite, Symantec AI Snapshot, and Macrovision FlexNet Admin Studio. InstallRite doesn't support a feature I need, and the other two stubbonly refuse to repackage Firefox. AI Snapshot just crashes, and Admin Studio creates an exe that installs ok, but then won't run Firefox.

The MSI that DraconPern has created looks great, but I don't really understand how I would modify this to include all the custom configuration settings I need, as well as install all the extra extensions. I guess I could learn how to use the MAKEMSI scripting language, but I was rather hoping I could use one of the snapshotting tools I described above.

Does anyone know why these tools fail to work?

the extensinons cannot be added using a snapshot technology, since they are installed based on each user's profile that is located in %appdata%\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles. there needs to be a more intelligent script that would publish the extensions to each user's profile as he/she logs in and uses firefox.
i've created an MSI installer based on Frontmotion's MSI that installs Firefox 1.5 along with 7 extensions (one of them IETab), and allows you to customize IETab "list of sites that would always load in IE". the MSI installer has been tested in Active Directory deployment and works perfectly. I'm planning to make it available to public shortly.

I would also love to see an official MSI for businesses for FF and TB. It would help adoption by larger organizations and businesses.

Looks like official adoption of MSI by Mozilla Firefox has been push back from Firefox 2 as well, it's down on the roadmap as a future requirement.
