Thanks very much for posting that. :)
Also, didn't like the way the Search engines functions had been changed.
Good to know there's an easy fix! ;)

... as long as Mozilla doesn't remove that preference in the future.

Which they probably will. Usually when they make a change like this with an about:config option it's just left there so they can back out should they encounter a problem in the near future. If it proves stable enough, they will tear out the old implementation. Mozilla does *not* like to support non-default features.

Bug 1119250. The plan was to do that in Firefox 38, but the preference still exists and works in the latest Nightly (what will become Firefox 40).

Edited to clarify.

Sometimes preferences stick around after they've been disconnected. Also, if you have a non-default setting on a preference, it will not disappear after it's removed because it's loaded with prefs.js.

patrickjdempsey wrote:This will make the old search-engine-button appear so you can see the selected search engine and easily change it, but keep the one-off search popup:

Code: Select all

.searchbar-search-button-container { display:none!important; }
.searchbar-engine-button { display: -moz-box!important; }

This IMO is a fundamental improvement over either individual method.

hmmm, this code doesnt seem to work. it does show the default search engine icon, but you cant change the engine.

It did work fine, they must have changed the implementation of the preference as a step towards getting rid of the old searchbar completely. I notice now that changing the preference also requires a restart. The days are numbered on this hack folks.

I can no longer find the old preference, so it finally has happened.
But it is not as bad as it used to be, there is a change search settings at the bottom so it takes me 4 steps or five if you count closing the setting, to change the engine, as opposed to 6.
TWO WERE STILL BETTER!!!
And I miss seeing an icon!!!
WHY DID THEY DO THIS? WHAT GOOD COULD POSSIBLY COME FROM THIS?
FOR THE CUSTOMERS?
AND FOR THEM?
Any chance to fix this now?
And where can we voice our complaints to Mozilla?

Got rid of the search bar years ago. I open all my search engines from bookmarks in a dedicated folder.

Overall, the current (broken, IMO) Search Bar isn't long for this world. Firefox 43 has a new pref in Options > Search for "Show search suggestions in location bar results" which is a good start towards eliminating the need for a separate Search Bar. I'll be surprised if the (new for Fx43) Search Bar is still around when Firefox 45 comes out.

I don't think I've ever used it. I used to have a small monitor and I didn't want to give up that much real estate.
