Yahoo Mail Notifications

I have 2 questions about notifications when using Yahoo Mail. This is for the Windows version, not a mobile device.

1. Does Yahoo mail have to be open in a tab for notifications to work? I tried with Yahoo Mail closed and nothing happened.
2. It there a way to have a notification sound?
