AFAIK, this isn't mentioned in this thread but in others that deal with JS benchmarks. This setting simply disables status bar changes by web pages, which saves some precious CPU time. It can also be set from "Tools > Options > Web Features > JavaScript > Advanced".

Okay. I already have that switched off. Actually only "Change images" is checked and I only switch on javascript on a couple of sites. Thanks
This really seems to be a great possibility for an extension.
If someone could work out some simple rules on how to configure these settings (machine speed, network speed etc) then a nice GUI could be produced to allow users with no understanding of these settings to optimize their Firefox performance.
If you still want full control then an advanced interface could still expose all the options as well to allow specific tweaking.
Sounds great. It'd be much better to point people at an extension that configures their settings for them than to have them editing their .js files with prefs from this thread.

Unfortunately, I don't have the understanding of how these settings are related to computer/network setup, but if someone were able to break down the rules then I might have time to whip something together...
Or maybe lazlo or someone else with more knowledge than me would be willing to take it on...
i have a 3366kb/s downstream and 124kb/s upstream connection
but i connect using a wireles network
thes results in losing 1-20%(depends on the weather) of the packedges
i have a 500 mhz cpu and 288MB ram

If I try other links, an alert pop-up says: " [link ****......] could not be found. Please check the name and try again. " but this problem can be settled instantly as my Norton Personal Firewall 2004 is Disabled.
