Running firefox 3.5 under both WIndows 7 x64 and linux fedora 11 x64 across 4 different machines I frequently get delays with the status line in firefox showing
Looking up XXXX this can stay for seconds, indeed 10's of seconds or more When this is occuring other applications don't appear to experience slow DNS lookups - dnslookup, ping etc at command line are fast/snappy. ALso other browsers such as midori, IE, opera, chrome/chromium are not affected either. I've tried creating new profiles, removing extensions, clearing our places.sqlite, but sooner or later the problem comes back This is rather driving me mad. * Are others continuing to see this * Can anyone recommend other things to check * Is there any specific debugging that can be enabled to assist in identify the exact cause of the delay I love the flexibility of firefox, but these delays are just driving me mad

I should add
* I've checked my network.* settings in about:config (they're usually 4-8 connections) * this occurs both on a work network and at home * ipv6 is disabled on both system & in terms of dns lookups in firefox

Hi,
I am seeing the same problem. I went back to firefox 3.0.x and the problem went away. The problem seems to happen intermittently. Surfing will be normal for hours at a time, then I will run into this issue for about 10 minutes or so. I have three machines running 3.5 on Fedora 11, and only one of them has this issue. they are all on the same network, using the same DNS servers, so that is not the problem. It's something particular to this machine/profile. While this occurs, all other internet apps continue working normally. I have tried the same things you have tried with no luck. At least now I know I'm not the only one!

I see your using a third-party build from Fedora as I have not had such issues with Firefox 3.5 related builds from Mozilla for the past months.

This bug happens to me on Windows Vista too. Has happened for a few months, I think since version 3.0 or so. Almost makes me switch browsers, very frustrating.

FWIW, I started a new profile and I haven't seen this problem since. I have slowly added back my extensions one at a time but didn't find a culprit there. Something else must be screwy in the profile. Any idea what it might be? I still have my old profile preserved so I can try different things if anyone has any ideas.

I just read the bug report, and it describes what I had with 3.5.1. It got so bad I went back to 3.0.11. I have been waiting for a fix before taking the time to try 3.5.xx again.

Have had the same issue on fedora64-bit pages rendering slowly, also some images do not load at all. Same exact issue on saybayon64-bit, and now the same exact problem on ubuntu karmic64-bit alpha 4. Firefox 3.0.13 runs flawlessly.

I like birds. But when spiders start eating birds that's a little creepy.

Check out "Firefox freezes on timeout". After looking over the list of postings here, I get the impression that a lot of people are encountering this, it must manifests itself in slightly different ways, and people tend to attribute timeouts to servers. After doing some comparison testing using IE, I realized that I've become accustomed to systemic sluggish performance by Firefox which may have nothing to do with network overloading or slow servers. It's a serious problem, and apparently nothing is being done about it.

dstarr and cosmotopper, this thread was for Linux builds of Firefox not the Windows.
Which was meant for Linux as you started it off topic with your Windows comments (as Frank). As for renaming there is no need for that in order to create a new clean Profile. http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_Manager#Linux ./firefox -P For the Windows users who cluttered the bug http://kb.mozillazine.org/Creating_a_new_Firefox_profile_on_Windows (Before picture of avatar) (animated version)

Not sure this is 100% the same issue, but I'm also experiencing random heavy slowdowns in FF 3.5.2 (official build). I've detailed my experiences here:
viewtopic.php?f=38&t=1435445 None of the fixes above have worked. I've also now tried running in Vista compatibility mode and FF as administrator. Neither has solved the issue. I think it's something to do with firefox in general and not just the way it does name queries. I've noticed that sometimes Firefox slows to a crawl when displaying "Looking up" in the status bar. At other times, it slows down when it displays "Contacting" or "Transferring" in the status bar. And again: all other browser work without any slowdown issues. This is really a peculiar issue and I'm at my wits end trying to fix this. I've ran through all the ideas/options I can think of and none of them seem to help.

I get this all the time on W7. Stuck page loads, page loads without any style info and often it just loads a blank white page. FF seems to have gotten buggier, more bloated and slower over the past year.
