Ah, thought I messed with some setting...
Looks like I'm affected by this bug, going to go over to the bug tracker mentioned and vote for it as well. In the mean time thanks for the patch.

This bug is fixed in the Mozilla Firefox 1.0.5 Test Build for Windows.

STILL NOT FIXED in new 1.5
I don't know what 'their' problem is, but they have STILL not corrected this problem.
There is a bunch of semi-coherent rambling argument about the problem on the bug page.
No one seems to be able to make a decision, or make the change.
The problem is that shortcuts are not treated as such and any attempt to follow them
using the save dialog box attempts to overwrite them like they are a file,
which is VERY irritating!
Anyway, you can fix the problem in 1.5 similar(ly?) to the others.
You have to use a Hex Editor (there are many free editors out there, try tucows.com).
MAKE A BACKUP OF your firefox.exe program file!!!
Firefox can't be running, btw, to do this, so you have to save this text somewhere first.
Edit firefox.exe and search for hex "10 00 8D 85".
There are three (3) occurrences of that sequence.
The THIRD one (address 001CC4ADh (for Win ME?)) needs to be modified
so that the "10" is changed to "00".
Then save the file and it should work.
It's too bad there isn't a patch program or something like that
that would make this easier for "non-techy-types", but I don't think there is.
