Firefox 1.0.4 released, and this bug still isn't fixed -- looks like there's been a little bit of promising discussion lately, though

Super big THANK YOU to the creator of the patch that fixes this annoyance:
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/attachment.cgi?id=183364

It works with Firefox 1.0.4. Thank you very much!

I prefer to edit the hex myself, rather than run some random .exe on my system -- but it's a good effort anyway

of course, what really needs to happen is that the bug just needs to be fixed, for reals

It exists all the way into 1.0.4!!! God I wish they'd fix it.

Strange: this bug doesn't affect me.

I'm running Windows 2000 Professional. The Firefox build I'm using is in my signature.

Looks like I'm affected by this bug, going to go over to the bug tracker mentioned and vote for it as well. In the mean time thanks for the patch.

Fix checked in to trunk, aviary1.0.1 and mozilla1.7 branches
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=283730

So the upcoming Firefoxes 1.0.5 and 1.1 should be fixed.

yeah, I'll have to get around to testing a nightly and see how well it was fixed -- there was a mini controversy there at the end right before the patch was checked in

(hopefully I can stop using the protest avatar in my rotation soon)

This bug is marked fixed, but as of 1.0.4 it isn't fixed. Does this mean it's fixed for 1.0.5?
When is that due out as stable?

STILL NOT FIXED in new 1.5

Post by popster »

I don't know what 'their' problem is, but they have STILL not corrected this problem.
There is a bunch of semi-coherent rambling argument about the problem on the bug page.
No one seems to be able to make a decision, or make the change.

The problem is that shortcuts are not treated as such and any attempt to follow them
using the save dialog box attempts to overwrite them like they are a file,
which is VERY irritating!

Anyway, you can fix the problem in 1.5 similar(ly?) to the others.

You have to use a Hex Editor (there are many free editors out there, try tucows.com).

MAKE A BACKUP OF your firefox.exe program file!!!

Firefox can't be running, btw, to do this, so you have to save this text somewhere first.

Edit firefox.exe and search for hex "10 00 8D 85".
There are three (3) occurrences of that sequence.
The THIRD one (address 001CC4ADh (for Win ME?)) needs to be modified
so that the "10" is changed to "00".

Then save the file and it should work.

It's too bad there isn't a patch program or something like that
that would make this easier for "non-techy-types", but I don't think there is.

popster, I do not know what version you are using, but as I wrote above ... this is FIXED in every version starting at 1.0.5 (including 1.0.7 and 1.5 ... the two newest official releases)
