Double-click word. Right-click > Search Google for "word". This has been a standard feature of Firefox for as long as I can remember. Alternatively, you can also drag a selection to the search box.
And honestly, if you are using Google Toolbar that could be the source of some of your problems. It's been known to break websites and hasn't been compatible with Firefox for a long long long time.

You have to open the find bar first. but it is still several operations when it is a one click operation on google toolbar
