when i add a bookmark to a folder.....i sometimes WANT to add the same page to another folder, but it seems firefox has turned into a microsoft product by giving features dont want or need...or have a choice in using. when trying to add another bookmark of the same page into another folder.... the EDIT this bookmark dialogue appears. It seems i am no longer allowed to add 2 of the same bookmarks. Is it possible to DISABLE the edit dialogue when trying to ADD a bookmark? for god's sake what happened to firefox? i just want more than one bookmark of a page.

How are you trying to add that bookmark to the second folder? I have Firefox 3.0.1 running with as many as 3 copies of the same bookmark in different folders.
And come on! One feature you think has changed in a way you don't like and you're comparing Firefox to an MS product? Get real, please.

You are correct. Bookmarks > Bookmark this page doesn't support creating multiple copies of a bookmark in Fx 3. But Copy/Paste does. Just find a copy of the bookmark that already exists, right-click Copy, right-click in the folder where the copy is desired and select Paste.
Is there a better way, Dan?

Drag the favicon in the URL bar to: 1. Bookmarks dropdown menu 2. the Bookmarks Toolbar 3. the Bookmarks Sidebar {Crtl + D} should also work. Ed

Thanks, Ed. Dragging the favicon is an easier way to create additional bookmarks for a bookmarked page than my suggestion. I hope this is helpful to the OP too. the-edmeister wrote:{Crtl + D} should also work.Ed
But it doesn't. That's the OP's original complaint. It just brings up the Edit Bookmark dialogue. That allows one to effectively move the bookmark but not create an additional copy. Anyhow, I haven't bothered to create any new folders in Fx 3. Now I use tags instead. Multiple tags instead of multiple copies.

@dan the boards are riddled with workarounds for 'features' .... not bugs, but "features" .... some more obvious than others (ie: the vomit bar)
If you have multiple bookmarks of the same page in different folders then congratulations....those bookmarks are left over from your previous version of firefox that worked normally, and you just havent noticed that you Cant just add a second bookmark Normally. It's a Bug.
dont say that the fact that you cant do the most fundamental of things like adding a second bookmark is now a "feature"... get real, that is Exactly like microsoft.

@Scope: Do you know how to show any gratitude for help we've tried to give you? Your frustration with some of the changes in Fx 3 are obvious, but we aren't the developers. Please don't kick us around.

Usually we have more people which ask how to remove duplicates. You are the first one i ever noticed in years which asked how to create duplicates. So it seems that there are very little people which really use this "feature". So do not blame the devs for changing a feature that is only used by approx 1 person in a million. And i think the real cause for this change was the switch from bookmarks.html to places.sqlite which works very different.
Think for yourself. Otherwise you have to believe what other people tell you.

Note that you never mentioned using Ctrl+D to try to add the duplicate. Since I don't usually use that I never noticed that when that is used, the Edit rather than create is invoked. Since there are multiple ways to add a duplicate bookmark, the removal of the Ctrl+D hardly constitutes a bug. A change in UI, yes. A bug, no.

Thanks so much @the-edmeister! Dragging the favicon in the desrired folder in the sidebar works fine. (...and thanks to all others, who posted on this subject)
I still wonder why is there no other way. Ctrl-D doesn't work. Right-click "Bookmark this Page" doesn't work, either, as the bookmark is already bookmarked somewhere else- and so the "Edit this Bookmark" field appears.
And I'm still a little puzzled by the other answers. How do you add a duplicate bookmark, DanRaisch? A one in a million problem, trolly?
I do understand, that if you use a database / tagging / virtual folder approach, you should not have duplicates. But I still have an old structure of folders, which is far from perfect, not fully thought trough but I can work with it.
Example: if I do Google searches on a specific theme, e.g. I want to spend a weekend in NY, look for flights, hotels, theaters etc., I make a new folder "Weekend New York" and store the bookmarks of the sites I lneed again in that folder - with "right click" -"Bookmark this page" . If by chance a site had been bm'ed before (e.g a hotel website, I had bm'ed before in another folder "Design Hotels", where I bm'ed design hotels all over the world, it will be removed from that folder --- unless, of course, I use the favicon approach. No problem in FF2.
Thanks again for your help, jj.
P.S.: Is there a way to go back to the old "bookmarks.html" without the database?

Me too, but mostly I find my bookmarks by searching. For me, folders is mostly an old habit now. Example: if I do Google searches on a specific theme, e.g. I want to spend a weekend in NY, look for flights, hotels, theaters etc., I make a new folder "Weekend New York" and store the bookmarks of the sites I lneed again in that folder
I used to do it that way too. Now, in Fx 3 I would use a tag named "Weekend New York". P.S.: Is there a way to go back to the old "bookmarks.html" without the database?
I don't think so.

I don't think so. No there isn't - period. I briefly explored the possibility of there being a "Community build" or 3rd Party build of Firefox 3 that used the older "bookmarks.html" filing system, that took advantage of code and functions that I saw in 3.0b4 or 5. That code turned out to be "transitory" and was removed before the final release version. The closest that you are gonna come is this preference which updates the bookmarks.html file when Firefox is closed. browser.bookmarks.autoExportHTMLhttp://kb.mozillazine.org/Browser.bookm ... ExportHTMLthe-edmeister steps on his soapbox: I have said it before and I'll say it again - Places should not have been "landed" on the Minefield Trunk in the Beta phase. Places came to late to be properly tested by all of us "Nightly testers", and what the public ended up with is a poorly patched, feature-incomplete version of what could-have-been and should-have-been a decent browser. And what happened with the new "loss-less" database system that seems to be losing some users bookmarks with the first minor update? The SUMO forum now looks like Firefox Support at MozillaZine used to, with thread after thread about lost bookmarks after a minor version update. Ed

Is this yours? Bug 451318--[meta] Unexpected behavior for bookmarks with the same url (duplicate bookmarks)And this? Bug 451581--Allow adding duplicate bookmarks with Ctrl-D or Star button (posted on Aug. 19--I just confirmed it) To add a duplicate: Bookmarks > Organize bookmarks <Ctrl> c to copy <Ctrl> v to paste However, having researched and written this, I find someone already did it a few days ago. Please, folks, leave references to what you have done to avoid duplicate efforts. Thanks.

No one is saying that your help here is not appreciated because it is, but this new bookmark system sucks in this new firefox & on 3 other of my machines I have switched back to firefox 2 because 3 has to many problems & yes in some since it is quicker , but in some since it is slow as a turtle. I have spead the stupid thing up by installing it to a ram drive that I created using software called (RamDisk Plus). Also I have noticed while bookmarking it also has a hard time when using the wonderful ext (add bookmark here), it ignores what folder you went to in the first place to add the bookmark here & goes where it wants. I am trying to give this new firefox a chance, but I am one of those people that have a massive amount of organized bookmark folders of over 12 years of constant computer geek net surfing & I mean I have thousands, so many that online bookmark sites will freeze up & they say that I have to many. I will never get rid of my bookmarks, plus I share them with others & because I tend to always have a site on a topic that someone maybe looking for,(hehe plus I work on computer repiring them & I have stacked up a great wall of china bookmark database so massive that I would not let my sweet Jesus have, I will share with anyone, but not change my structure just because the makers of firefox desides to on a wim change the bookmark structure around. This new firefox bookmark situation is running me ragged & I love firefox, but this new version I think is closer to the microsoft force feed kind of approach, just like that crazy scan the file before it goes thru crap & use our antivirus on our computer to do so, which in tell slows down our internet browsing, but I already turned that crap off & not to mention I did around 6 hacks under the (about:config) which now has this cheezy warning sign, talking about (You May Void Your Warranty) & I always say if it is mine & I paid for it or I built it, then I will be voiding the warranty just because I feel like it, because A normal computer user I am not, but it seem with every update of all software of today they are slowly trying to take more & more rights from us the users & what they do not understand we will always fight & defy them & do exactly what the heck we want to do. I will try to find an answer & then I will post if I find anything online. Oh & sorry for just running my mouth about off the subject stuff, but just blowing off some( can't make a dang on plain bookmark in new firefox steam thats all). Again excuse me computer geek in the house!(hehe).
