Are you sure you want to navigate away from the page?

Post by kevs »

I would pay money to not see this come up.

To confirm, there is nothing I can do about this correct? This is encoded by the page I've visited.

Hate it. thanks!

Yes, it is coded in the sites that it pops up from. So, unless someone else here has a way to keep it from happening, or can point to a Greasmonkey of Stylish script to get rid of them, live with it, or don't visit that site.

For the record, the wording on this dialog has been greatly improved for Firefox 4.

Why would Firefox 4 have it different?

Yes and no.

Yes because the dialog is easier to understand and interpret at a glance, so you can dismiss it faster.
No because you still can't disable it.

"I would therefore like to see an additional button clearly labeled to avoid
being misconstrued... something like "Force Exit", so the user can abandon the
page (and only that page) immediately without processing any more events.

In other words, the websites that rely on this technique to trap users should
not be rewarded with _any_ data collected in the event processing during
unloading of the page, even something as limited as the knowledge of which
button was pressed in the beforeunload dialog."

Blue,
I love it!, It's a known issue, great.
But no one has invented anything/ add on? why not? would be wonderful to be able to force quit a single page.

BTW, I have to uninstall Ghostery, as it was keeping certain pages from loading, so I'm vulnerable again to trackers, unless there is a more bug free add on. should I even care about that issue?

Again, this is being worked on for Firefox 4. See this bug:
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=59314

Basically, alert(), prompt(), and confirm() dialogs no longer block interacting with the window, so you can close the tab even with the dialog still open. This doesn't include the "Leave Page" dialog yet, but it will eventually.

Did not understand the leave page part Blue, but FF 4 will take care of this? when you think it's coming out?
Any opinion on what happened with Ghostery/ options on that?

Firefox 4 is planned for early 2011
https://wiki.mozilla.org/Firefox/4/Beta

And you already had a topic about Ghostery

The wiki, kind of hard to understand that page.

That thread is my thread! but my question never answered, is it odd that Ghostery caused that issue of not being able to buy that stamp? What is that?
And alternatives to it?
Do you bother with an add on of this type?

This is very much a problem for me, as the error message continues out of sight with no buttons or anything visible. I can never navigate away from the page since if I press esc or the x in the corner it'll just pop up again the next time I try to close the tab.

One thing you can do is temporarily disable JavaScript. This is especially easy if you're using the web developer add-on. Disable JavaScript, close the tab, then re-enable JavaScript.
