Email delivery failure

Post by rlk107 »

I've been having an mail delivery problem (mail shows in the 'Sent folder, but it is not received by the addressee).
No error msg is displayed and even displays 'sending' and 'successfully delivered' msgs.
I've isolated the problem down to an embedded .jpg in my signature file.
Delivery fails with the jpg in and has no problem when I remove it.

This only applies to the signature file.
jpgs in both the body of the email and attached jpgs are not a problem.

As far as I can tell, this started suddenly within the last month. (version problem?)

Stats:
T/bird vers - 3.1.7
AV - MS Security Essentials
Firewall - ZoneAlarm
System - WinXP SP3

Also shows failure after a folder compact operation,
Port name - smtp.comcast.net (Comcast says it's not a problem with their system)
Port # - 587
Connect security - SSL/TLS (I tried STARTTLS. No joy.)

The bottom line is, well, don't put a jpg in your signature file.
That's a work-around, but, at 70, I guess I'm just old and stubborn and would like to find an answer.

The HTML tag in question is <IMG SRC="http://home.comcast.net/~RLK107/RLK107d/CMT/CMTA logo.jpg" border=0 hspace=10>

That's not a version problem. In fact, it's not a Thunderbird problem at all. The issue arises somewhere after Thunderbird turns the message over to the Comcast SMTP server.

The fact that the message appears in the Sent folder, including the signature, indicates that that message was passed by Thunderbird to the SMTP server. From that point on it is out of Thunderbird's control. It may not be Comcast's server that is at issue either but somewhere between Thunderbird and the recipient it's probable that a spam filter is judging that signature file to be potentially problematic and stopping the message.

Thanks, Mark.

Are you saying that my system is in the clear as far as causing any problems?
Could my system be doing some spam filtering after turnover to the Comcast SMTP server or is this a problem with a server between me and Comcast?

Just trying to isolate the problem.

I appreciate your time and help.

No, your system is not involved, except in that it is sending the original message. The spam filtering probably takes place AFTER the Comcast SMTP server.
