Firefox has just started giving me this message "Are you sure you want to navigate away from this page?" Is there a way to eliminate that window on facebook?

I am sure I want to navigate away from this page

I read that if you put this in a text file (Notepad will do) and name it with .js extention (like whatever.js) then run it (double click on whatever.js) it will put an end to this mess. Does it work? Your guess is as good as mine... Use at own risk and all that.
Everything under this line, starting with //

This box is normal. if you DO something in gmail for example and its slow for some reason and you click away it will pop this box warning you hey gmail is not done if you leave it won't complete the command you gave it.

the problem is OTHER less friendly sites have figures out how to "tap" into this function in firefox.

you CAN NOT exit the tab unless you click OK and i do not want to click ok (its a matter of principle and could open up abuses in the future)

the whole point of CLOSING a tab in this situation to ESCAPE a potentially bad site and I do not want to click ANYTHING but close and have it GO AWAY.

SO how to I prevent sites from popping this box at all? I can live with it not working in gmail as well I just want this box GONE and never see it again. or a way to override it IE right click a tab and FORCE CLOSE regardless of the code on the site.

I don't have Smiley Central. I have a program, Window Washer, that clears all cookies frequently. I get this message on many sites of different kinds. I even got it on a site home page whose purpose was to direct you to other pages on the site.
I want Norton or someone to come up with a way to filter these out. Some times when this message pops up, it won't go away. The only way I can get away from some of them is to Ctrl Alt Delete and use Task Manager to stop it.
I'm trying to contact Norton to suggest a solution, but I have to select from options that don't include giving suggestions.

its CODE in the site invoking a dialog box. like clicking file and save as.

we need to figure out what the code is and use something like greasemonkey to "strip" it you also CAN NOT bypass this box I had to use task manager to terminate the process (twice) because I am thick headed and refuse to hit ok :-)

I also use ctrl/alt/del, because I refuse to click the popup box, but it's a PITA. There really must be a way around this, and I agree, it's likely to become more common in the future. There are so many instances where the control of how you browse seems to backward; it's MY computer, MY connection, and MY browser, but the site has control. Like sites that won't let your browser remember your login info. Or the way Google/gmail will randomly require you too re-enter your ID/PW, as though the user is too dumb to know whether or not their non-public computer situation is "secure". Again, all PITA's, just on principle alone.

These dialog boxes are written into HTML pages. They are usually conditionals used when a file is not saved, email not sent, etc and are used in good faith.

Unfortunately they there are some who abuse the situation and apply them when they want you to stay on a site when you try to leave. Stupid!

It is OK to click the OK button as it is usually the only way to dismiss the dialog box and allow the departure to complete and close the page.

Where problems will surface is when the site tells you, "You have a virus" and they have the right software to fix the problem. Some sites have created animated gif files that make them look like they are scanning your pc - but they really are not. You try to exit and a dialog box appears. One I recall wanted me to install AVCleaner.exe (or something like that).

The PC may not have a problem, but I believe if you install this AVCleaner.exe - YOU WILL HAVE A PROBLEM. Then you get ongoing popups from the AVCleaner.exe (whatever it inserts) and the business selling the program to fix the problem. And of course it can fix the problem - they put it there. So you tell your friends - buy this it works...they make $$$.

You only have 2 choices with these.

Turn off JavaScript and miss out on the beneficial aspects of JavaScript and avoid the nuisance dialog boxes.

Turn on JavaScript and enjoy the beneficial aspects of JavaScript and tolerate these nuisance dialog boxes.

Nope. Not from what Ive seen. Just a JavaScript popup dialog box that "requires" attention. You must dismiss the dialog.

Read here. This particular code does not work - coding problems and onbeforeunload() is a MS proprietary function and would only work with IE. However, this is all these dialog boxes are.

Nope. Not from what Ive seen. Just a JavaScript popup dialog box that "requires" attention. You must dismiss the dialog.

And that precisely is the bug.
A webpage shouldn't have the ability to prevent me from exiting my browser when I choose.
A webpage shouldn't have the ability to HIJACK my browsing experience.
If a webpage wants my attention, it should be paying me cash money :)

If I go Alt+File+Exit, that means I don't want to be prompted by 12 angry webpages, asking if I'm sure I want to navigate away -- its my damn browser.

I shouldn't need to resort to `kill firefox` or other stupid tricks, just to avoid POPUPS, its not 1995

It used to be this evil javascript would require you to kill your browser

Code: Select all

    while(1){ alert("click me"); }

It used to be, that if you had 5 tabs open, an

Code: Select all

alert("click me");
would block all the tabs until you clicked it, block the whole application, because it was a native OS popup dialog

It used to be a lot of stupid things like that, and onbeforeunload is one stupid thing they forgot to fix
