New name...

Post by Bill Daly »

One of the definitions of Phoenix at dictionary.com says "A marvelous person or thing".

So why not Marvel? It's simple and to the point, easily searchable, and I think we can all agree this browser is a marvelous thing.

Don't know if there would be any legal issues with that one though, in regards to the comic book company, but I like it.

i think a good name is not meant to be too literal.. but rather it should evoke something nice...

(eg: amazon=amazing, etc...)

so based on the Marvel idea.. it would be cooler to name it Marvin (marvin the browser.. cute no?)

:)

Armada.

Because it rolls off the tongue and represents the fleet of Mozilla products ready to attack Internet Explorer.

How about "BLizard." Seems to have a "GeckoLite" feel. Of course all new graphics would be required. 8)

It also contains the letters illa which, whilst being one letter short of zilla still has an element of Mozilla about it and thereby the right association and it's a slightly revolutionary browser. I can't be arsed to research any trademark conflicts so that is something that may affect this suggestion.

I came up with this suggestion earlier, and still think it's one of the best names :)

priior wrote:raptor must be the single most recommended name! interesting no? :)

And Raptor won't be used, because of trademark reasons (Raptor was the first name of the Gecko/NGLayout engine, and mozilla.org had to change it, just like Phoenix developers have to change the name of their browser right now).

Some other names that can't be used:

Any variation on Phoenix (ie. fenix, pheonix, phenix, etc). Blake said that the name had to be totally different.
Chameleon (K-Meleon is already the name of a gecko-based browser for w32).
Chimera (or Chimaera): already the name of a gecko-based browser for OS X.
Raptor, as said above.

Phoenix is good!

Post by rtepp »

I'd vote for name Phoenix, if we absolutely MUST change the name,
I believe it would be best just to add some kind of prefix to the Phoernix:

  • Phoenix Browser
  • Phoenix NG (New Generation)

Anyway - I do not believe they (Phoenix Technologies) can do whole a lot about the way we decide to call our browser, scince they are not into browser business and thus the meanings of two trademarks should not be confusing.

Phoenix technologies make a (BIOS) browser, so they have the right to complain about Phoenix-the-webbrowser.
And again, Blake said that the new name must not be a variation on Phoenix.

Hypatia

Post by Eloquence »

The browser should be called Hypatia, after the famous ancient female philosopher and scientist who lived in Alexandria from 370-415 AD and who was brutally murdered by a Christian mob. Do a search for her name, she's a very interesting person. And not trademarked.

There are other persons from antiquity who would be good as browser names
- Strabo, the geographer
- Aristarchus, one of the first to propose a heliocentric worldview
- Archimedes, Pythagoras
- Aesop, a Greek author famous for his fables
- Democritus, who "invented" atoms
