Thunderbird does not open all attachments

Post by GypsyCowgirl »

I can not see attachments in Thunderbird incoming mail.

If I open the same exact email using my LG Optimus cell phone, or if I open the same message in Outlook Express, the attachment is right there on the email page for me to see.

Any clues on how to see the attachments in Thunderbird?

* Which version of Thunderbird? Check Help>About for the version number.
* What kind of mail - POP, IMAP?
* Do you regularly compact your folders? Weekly or more often is strongly recommended. Check http://kb.mozillazine.org/Compacting_folders for more information on compacting folders.
* Do you have Thunderbird set to "Display Attachments Inline" under the View menu?

Forgot to say I only installed Thunderbird a few days ago, so there has not been a need to compact messages. Thunderbird is set up to display Attachments Inline.

Unselect "Display attachments inline".

If you downloaded a large number of messages from the email server or deleted a large number of downloaded messages after that initial input it would still be wise to compact the message files.

I changed the setting not to display attachments inline, and resent the email with the attachment and I still can not see an attachment.

What type of attachment are you sending?

With the message open on the screen, press Ctrl+U. Look for elements that refer to "Content-Type:", "Content-Transfer-Encoding:", and "Content-Disposition: attachment". What values appear after those titles?

I am not sending the attachment, someone is sending it to me, but it is not coming through. After I changed the Display Inline setting, I asked them to resend, but again it did not come through, but was on my cell phone email and my Outlook Express email.

It may be a problem with the encoding of that specific message. The part below looks sure contradictory: The content type says "related" (i.e., image within an HTML message and an embedded image as top construct) whereas the second "type=" attribute (which I don't think is valid, but may be wrong) says "alternative" (i.e., plain-text vs. HTML parts should be the top level, the images nested within the HTML part as "alternative").

Code: Select all

Content-Type: multipart/related;
   type="multipart/alternative";
   boundary="----=_NextPart_000_0026_01CBFC90.F9594B20"

Since "alternative" is nested within "related" later, the "type" appears to be wrong, but I don't know which impact it may have on Thunderbird being able to find the attachments.

Code: Select all

Content-Type: image/jpeg;
   name="Image1.jpg"
Content-Transfer-Encoding: base64

I'm missing a "Content-ID:" heading here. Do you see the images at all, either in the message body or in the attachment list?

Hi,

the same problem with thunderbird 6.0 : Sometimes the attachment is displayes sometimes not. In classical view the attachment is always
displayed.
Her an attachment that is not displayed:
########################################################
werden.

------=_NextPart_000_001E_01CA71B6.E7852650
Content-Type: application/pdf;
name="=?iso-8859-1?Q?Herzog=2C_F_-_Formgestalt_und_W=E4rmehaushalt_bei_Sukkulen?=
=?iso-8859-1?Q?ten.pdf?="
Content-Transfer-Encoding: base64
Content-Disposition: attachment;
filename="=?iso-8859-1?Q?Herzog=2C_F_-_Formgestalt_und_W=E4rmehaushalt_bei_Sukkulen?=
=?iso-8859-1?Q?ten.pdf?="
JVBERi0xLjMKJeTjz9IKNCAwIG9iago8PC9UeXBlL1hPYmplY3QKL1N1YnR5cGUvSW1hZ2UKL1dp
###########################################################

and here an attachment that is displayed:

###########################################################
Alex

------=_NextPart_000_0021_01CA71D9.3AD240A0
Content-Type: application/pdf;
name="Geller, G N und Nobel, P S - Cactus Ribs- Influence on PAR Interception and CO2 Uptake.pdf"
Content-Transfer-Encoding: base64
Content-Disposition: attachment;
filename="Geller, G N und Nobel, P S - Cactus Ribs- Influence on PAR Interception and CO2 Uptake.pdf"

JVBERi0xLjUNJeLjz9MNCjE5NCAwIG9iaiA8PC9MaW5lYXJpemVkIDEvTCAyMDgyMTczNS9PIDE5
###########################################################

Some ideas how to get thunderbird to display always the attachment ?

Regards
isk

howdy ivsako,

the thread you have posted to is months old and deals with a different version of tbird. you will likely get more help by making a new thread of your own.

take care,
