highlight text and rt click open as page in new tab/window

Post by emitetsaw »

A desirable feature that I would like to see is the ability to highlight a section of text and open said text in a new window or tab. If the text is html or otherwise interprettable then it should be displayed as such. I encounter this typically when dealing with my text email. This could be an option to open a window/tab with the contents of the clipboard.

Typcially I find my self receiving an email in html format and I need to save it to a file and then open said file in a window/tab. This would become an order of magnitude easier if I had the option available via highlight and rt. click or via highlight, copy, and open clipboard as tab/window.

Thanks for your time and effort if you decide that this enhancement is worth making. Perhaps it could join the textutils package. I did not find it there.

BTW, thanks for the highlight url and open in tab via rt. click. This has improved my perceived productivity immeasurably.

This is a FAQ. Please search the forum because I am tired of posting the links.

Prehaps someone should put a sticky topic in the forum, giving the link of the faq, and to search that first?

Please read what is posted rather than leaping to conclusions. In fact what you THINK he said is covered by the last line of his post.

What is being asked for is the ability to:

1. Highlight a BLOCK OF TEXT
2. Open THIS TEXT in a new tab. Not as a URL, but as the actual text, in the main browser window.

I don't see it being added because the browser-only nature of Phoenix prohibits the actual creation of html pages presumably, even temporary ones for viewing. Could be wrong though.

My bad! I saw the end of the post and wasn't reading clearly enough. I'm just getting tired of seeing the same questions over and over. This sounded similar enough that only a few bits caught my eye.

Try a bookmarklet http://www.bookmarklets.com/tools/data/index.phtml (Make page with selection)

A similar bookmarklet that also preserves formatting and images is http://www.squarefree.com/bookmarklets/ ... _selection .

Related bugs:
* <a href="http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=105580">bug 105580</a> Enhanced context menu for selections
* <a href="http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=166317">bug 166317</a> Right-click should let me open a table cell in new Window (to overcome bad web site designs)

I think it would be reasonable to have "view only selected text" on the context menu for selected text. (Along with "copy", "search web for 'foo'", "open 7 selected links in tabs", etc.)

I think these are better left to the realm of extensions. Personally I get along fine without most of these context menu items. I did write the text links extension because I wanted that functionality, and I use it fairly often, but even that most people might not want.

Thanks for figuring out what I meant even though I didn't say it clearly. I tried each of the posted bookmarklets and none of them worked. :( I will try tracking down some other bookmarklets that appear interesting. If I could save the highlighted text to a file, then that would get me most of the way there. I do think that there is a large audience that could use the highlighted block of text opened in a new tab/window.

I also tried the "view selection" bookmarklet, as described on Bug 166317
http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=166317#c8
------- Additional Comment #8 From Jesse Ruderman 2002-10-27 17:29 -------

Details of the workaround:
1. Go to http://www.squarefree.com/bookmarklets/pagedata.html
2. Drag the green "view selection" link to your personal toolbar.
3. Select some text with the mouse, or Ctrl-click a table cell (in any page).
4. Click the "view selection" bookmarklet.

This should open just the selection in a new window.

Doesn't work for me with Phoenix 0.5:

Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.0; en-US; rv:1.3a) Gecko/20021207 Phoenix/0.5
(with the extensions TBE and NukeImage)

It did work with Mozilla 1.0 (Yes, I know its old now):

Mozilla 1.0
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.0; en-US; rv:1.0.0) Gecko/20020530

And it worked with IE 5.5, also Windows 200

Update - I turned off TBE and restarted Phoenix, now it works for me. Highlight a selection or control+click on a table cell, then click the bookmarklet on my toolbar - launches a new window with just that selection.

I guess something TBE does to make new windows into new tabs breaks this...

Update:
It seems to be the "Open New Tabs instead of Windows" for "New Windows Opened By Java Script" that breaks the bookmarklet.

Turning that off (even with Single Window Mode on) makes this work...

Can anyone suggest a way to get TBE and the bookmarklet to work together?

ContextMenu Extensions Code to open selection in new tab

Post by Goldzilla »

The following code is for Windows. Modify pathnames for other operating systems.

var a = "<pre>" + _selection + "</pre>";
_writeTo(a, "c:\\selection.html");
_openNewTab("file:///C:/selection.html");
return;

To open the selected text with HTML formatting in a new tab:

var a = "<pre>" + _selectionSource + "</pre>";
_writeTo(a, "c:\\selection.html");
_openNewTab("file:///C:/selection.html");
return;

Note that the latter doesn't work perfectly but it does links and images. That's about as much testing that I did.

See http://www.mozillazine.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=1905 for more information on ContextMenu Extensions and Phoenix.

This involves loading CustomButtons add-on

[url]https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/custom-buttons/[/url]

Then loading a button that has the function [b]Selected Text to New Tab[/b]

[img]http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o26/squiresmurf/Firefox/ClipboardPlus002.jpg[/img]

Here is the link to load that button

Gee all the people from 2002 are going to be so happy.
I suggest you find another way to advertise your favourite addon other than bumping nine year old threads

Holy Freaking Old Thread Batman!. You may have just bumped one of the oldest thread yet based on time period length.

Locking due to being very ancient.

Use the forum Advanced search and not the Google site search box and do pay attention to the dates.
