Firefox always says I have 2 new email?

Every since I installed Firefox, it has told me in the "Tools" menu that I have 2 new emails. I was using Outlook for email at the time of installation, but now I use Thunderbird. With either I use IMAP. Is there any particular reason it is doing this, and anything I can do to fix it (remove it, or make it accurate)? Thanks in advance for any help.

This is because outlook is still registered fully or partially as your default mail client. If you cannot get Thunderbird to fully register itself as the new default mail client (in Thunderbird Tools | Options | General | check use thunderbird as default mail) you can try this handy little utility which will do the trick.

I tried using Windows XP's built in tool for this and for some reason it hates Thunderbird (but likes Firefox just fine). Is there anyway I might fix this without an outside program? I don't like using unneeded software when I don't have to.

I broke down and used the tool you suggested and it didn't help. Firefox still says I have 2 new emails (I have none), and everything is (arguably) working correctly. Other ideas mayhaps? I appreciate your help either way. Thanks much.

Are you by chance using a limited account? I also had this issue but with outlook express. Before finding this utility, I had to grant admin privileges to the account just long enough to unregister thunderbird and reregister it as the default (just logging into a separate admin account was not sufficient).
Then I found the utility mentioned above which seemed a simpler solution. I would fully agree though on the not liking to use unneeded software.

I am not on a restricted account. I'm not entirely sure what else would be causing this. I'll keep trying, but thus far, nothing has worked.

I've delt with the registry, program access, Thunderbird, and any possibly conflicting email applications. I think I may have found some kind of bug in Thunderbird, because it just doesn't seem to be anything else.
If I use the "enable access to this program" checkbox in program access and defaults, it sets it, then unchecks it when I go back to verify. Once set, Thunder (from within the application) can not be unset to default. It will (once again) just set itself back. Everything seems to know it is default other than Windows itself. If I click a mailto: link or something along those lines from within any browser, it will open thunderbird. Now my question is, is it possible Thunderbird just has a bug, or is this something that is an outside influence?

Most likely you have an account at hotmail. If so log on and delete what you have read or dont want. For some reason its reading it from either XP or OE.
Worked for me

The unread mail count is a Windows problem.
If you have TweakUI installed, you can go to Repair > Repair Unread Mail Count and Click "Repair Now". Alternately, you can navigate to the following key in regedit: [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\UnreadMail\account] Delete or modify the MessageCount values in the account sub-keys.

Dude, you so totally rock! TweakUI's registry edit did it. I'll have to remember that. Rotton obscure little software problems.... grumbly! Thanks all for your help.

The win2k version of TweakUI doesn't support Repair Unread Mail Count. I added the registry keys and can set what Firefox displays as the number of new mail to whatever value I choose, but its never updated to match the actual new mail count. I've read http://support.microsoft.com/default.as ... US;q304148 . The writeup on the SHSetUnreadMailCount Function at http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/defau ... lcount.asp claims it requires XP as a minimum.
Any suggestions on how to solve this for a non-XP system? I'm using v1.0.3 under win2k SP4.

Try: http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;e ... 20&sid=139 (Overview of the Mail Notification Display on the Windows XP Welcome Screen. It's Article ID #304148). Oh, I see you've read it - I want to point to a specific part though please. It details the exact registry key and contains a hyperlink to a more detailed page about the unread mail count function, doesn't deleting the value of that key via regedit.exe so that it is is restored upon reboot, fix the problem? Assuming a similarly named key in Win2k I mean? Another resource that might be very useful (again XP focused but discusses the overall unread mail count tool, explaining how it'll possibly refer to various mail apps) is: http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/defau ... 282003.asp I don't have a W2K platform to play around on so can't be more specific, but I hope the links help. If not, no harm done.
