Advice on SeaMonkey 2.0.15

Post by Pim »

I plan on using SM 2.0 until the newest release version has all the bugs out (mainly the missing features from 2.2 that I really use in 2.0 and would miss terrible), but there will be no more releases from the 2.0 line, is that right?
Unless there are more recent releases than 2.0.14, but I can't find any.
There is a pre-release from 2.0.15 here, dating from 6 June
http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/ ... omm-1.9.1/
but is that safe to use? Can anyone recommend it? (Or against it?)

Just a automated nightly build that may or may not even have any real checkins since 2.0.14.

Just asking. It does appear in this list though, and it says 18 bugfixes.

I had been using the 2.0.x nightlies before switching to 2.2, & so had regular (daily) .mar updates, & no issues using any 2.0.15 builds (for whatever changes there may have been).

Given that there are no recent 2.0.x builds, I would assume there will be no more forthcoming, so grab that last one & go with it.

Looks like there will be a 2.0.15 after all: Bug 679703, Tracking bug for build and release of SeaMonkey 2.0.15 Final Release.

And also a 2.3.1.

Yes, so making sure that the server certificates still work seems to be the primary concern for this "dot" update. Let's hope he's taking the mozilla-1.9.1 fixes that landed since 2.0.14 as ride-alongs and not just the preference update... (no changes on comm-1.9.1 since).

nope. didn't happen. SM 2.0.15 isn't gonna be released anymore. I think SM 2.0x may have been EOLed already.

Yes, it definitely is EOL by now though it looked like there might be one at that time. A major update offer from 2.0.x to 2.6.1 is in progress and should show up for 2.0.x users soon.

I was initially planning this release for Bug 679677, but it actually turns out we don't need it.

The current release is 2.6.1, SeaMonkey 2.7 should come by the end of the month. The new rapid-release system implies larger version-number steps (without necessarily implying major feature changes).

Following some negative feedback from the enterprise community about the lack of stable release branches which ensure a specific set of "frozen" features for a period of time, Mozilla plans to issue extended support releases (ESR) based on Firefox 10.0 and Thunderbird 10.0, which will replace the Firefox 3.6 and Thunderbird 3.1 branches. The corresponding SeaMonkey version would be 2.7, followed by 2.7.x "dot" security/stability releases while new features are introduced with 2.8, 2.9, etc. (mostly depending on the availability of sufficient build and test resources as such an additional branch doesn't quite come for free).

Thus, if you like to use those to avoid having to deal with small incremental changes from update to update, moving to the ESR train implies a larger step from SM 2.0.x to 2.7.x, but then features stay stable until 2.14 or so (following the currently envisioned schedule). Obviously, the changes to features people liked in 2.0.x and which were modified or removed in later versions won't come back in 2.7.x ...

According to Callek, we don't have enough resources to do a ESR build for SM 2.7.0 (off the Gecko/Firefox 10 ESR). Our new machines might be up in time to do a 2.7.1 or 2.7.2 off Firefox 10.1/10.2ESR. No promises though.

Bummer, it sure would be nice to have an ESR branch for SeaMonkey as well, so let's hope that serverops can get those run within the next 6-weeks cycle...

FWIW, the comm-esr10 and mozilla-esr10 repositories are in place now, thus SeaMonkey could jump on that train whenever resources are considered sufficient.
