Attachments not received

Post by bmarshal »

Sometimes when I receive a mail from a client the attachment is not visible. If I view the source I can see it, but there's no sign of it in the normal view. If I check the mail on my webmail I can see the attachment, and if I send it to myself from there the attachment is visible in TB.
Below is a view of the source up to the attachment.
Any clues as to why TB won't show the attachment? Or what else do I need to look at or show you?

Thanks for any help,
Bill

The message defines what string to use at the beginning and end of each body party (message body, attachment etc.) twice. I'm not certain that is legal. I'm having trouble deciding if I'm interpreting section 7.2 of http://www.faqs.org/rfcs/rfc1521.html correctly.

I remember noticing a number of threads about problems with a multipart/related (body parts should not be considered individually but rather as parts of an aggregate whole) message that contains a multipart/alternative section (two or more body parts displaying different representations of the same message body) . Let me do some searching and refresh my memory.

Does it make a difference (able to open the attachment) whether "view -> message body as" is set to "plain text" or "original html"?

howdy y'all,

it might be related to this ...
- Inline images not shown in attachment pane when "View>>message body as.plaintext" (after bug 351224, image embedded in multipart/related part is not accessible as attachment)
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=602718

there were a whole lot of threads about that one after tb5 came out. bug 351224 fixed things to behave correctly and that broke lots of stuff that had been "getting by" until then.

plus, here is a collection of bugs on the general subject that makes "interesting" reading. [*grin*]
- [Meta] Bad handling of mail of multipart/alternative in multipart/related or vice versa (semantically incorrect structure for ordinal/traditional mailer)
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=505172

IMPORTANT!
if a bug fits your situation, you might want to vote for it ... and perhaps add yourself to the CC list. please, do NOT comment unless you have new info. bugspamming - "me too" comments and various rants [*grin*] - is a good way to get the bug ignored.

The first bug report basically suggests you install a nightly build of 8.0 from http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/ ... d/nightly/ and then install an add-on at https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunde ... ody-parts/

I tried that. Using "view -> message body as -> all body parts" transformed a message with a embedded image and 1 jpeg attachment into a message with no embedded image and three attachments. Not something you'd normally want to read a message using, but it looks like it will make certain you can open or save any part of a message.

howdy tanstaafl,

yes, it is not pretty. [*grin*] but i don't think it's supposed to be at this point. it is supposed to allow one to get to attachments that are sometimes totally hidden due to malformed structure created by the sending app combined with the new[ish] "do it right no matter what side effects occur" code introduced in bug 351224.

the addon can be left out if you do it by hand. lookee ...
http://kb.mozillazine.org/Thunderbird_6 ... L_messages

too bad they couldn't get it into tb6.0.1 or even tb7. [*sigh ...*] still, it did get fixed!

Thanks for your help guys. There are supposed to be 2 pdf files attached. I enclose the code from the message that I resent to myself from my webmail where TB detects that there are indeed two attachments. It makes no difference whether "view -> message body as" is set to "plain text" or "original html". I'm using TB6.0 so the add ons aren't compatible.

howdy bmarshal,

from what i can see at the moment, you have the following choices ...
1- go back to tb3
http://www.mozillamessaging.com/en-US/t ... easenotes/
2- use webmail for those msgs
3- hand edit each msg to fix the problem
4- install one of the early testing versions of tbird that has the fix in it [listed by tanstaafl above] and enable the fix

fix 2 aint too pretty. fix 3 is downright icky. fix 4 is a bit of a risk - not a lot, but more than some might be comfy with. fix 1 is the only one i can really recommend to folks who aren't interested in the techie side of things.

take care,

You can reduce your risk if you decide to use a nightly build by browsing the daily build thread in the Thunderbird Builds forum and looking at the comments, before choosing one.

Thanks for the clarity of the options. As it's not a frequent event I'll opt for the webmail option when the attachments seem to be missing and I'll wait for updates and new releases of TB. After all, the rest of the stuff works really well!

best regards,
