Theming for Firefox 4.0 meta thread

Post by patrickjdempsey »

We talked about this months ago and I keep forgetting to do this. We've got quite a few good resources collected here on theming for Firefox 4.0, both from scratch and upgrading from 3.6. There's also several "restoring" topics about restoring features that have been axed. In no particular order:

Firefox 4.0-specific stuff

Opening the Omni.jar (short version: use WinRAR):
viewtopic.php?f=18&t=1979399

Backwards compatible tab styles for Firefox 4.0:
viewtopic.php?f=18&t=1949789

App Tab issues:

viewtopic.php?f=18&t=2162837

Window Control buttons in Vista/7 Aero:
viewtopic.php?f=18&t=2131121
viewtopic.php?f=18&t=1953371&start=60
viewtopic.php?p=10708877#p10708877

Seriously Hacking the Addons Manager (a little old but still useful I think):
viewtopic.php?f=18&t=1968575

mcdavis's Notes on Testing Themes:
viewtopic.php?f=18&t=1932839
Media Query, -moz-system-metric results, for applying specific tweaks for specific Windows OS themes:
viewtopic.php?p=10474841#p10474841

Restoring the back-forward-dropmarker in 4.0:
viewtopic.php?f=18&t=2019371

Restoring 3.x urlbar feed button in 4.0:
viewtopic.php?f=18&t=2019359

Cross OS stuff (not specific to Firefox 4.0)

How to theme for different OS's (or versions of Firefox) economically:
viewtopic.php?f=18&t=906535
... and a situation where it was needed:
viewtopic.php?f=18&t=2128391

Cross OS scrollbars:
viewtopic.php?f=18&t=682635

Light-Weight Theme stuff (great for just changing buttons without having to support the whole theme!)

Firebird Theme - a "light-weight" Theme:
viewtopic.php?f=18&t=1472225
L.A.R. Grizzly's light-weight themes:
viewtopic.php?f=48&t=2075495

If you have other suggestions, please post them soon so I can get this sucker locked and stickied.

This should be pinned, at least for a couple of months while the rush is on to update themes for FF4.

Very helpful compilation of resources. Are there any posts related to theming changes for Wordpress from 3.6 to 4.0? I notice my wordpress blogs display differently on 3.6 and 4.0, particularly with the css layout.

Um...no. Nobody tracks Wordpress here since Wordpress is not a Mozilla product.

giantcatfish, this thread is specifically about changes in the themes for the Mozilla Firefox browser itself, not websites.

Well it hasn't had any posts since June so it is probably safe to release it.

You can go ahead and set it free... we can always find it again if someone is just now updating from 3.6.
