While I've never messed with this, it looks like you should be able to deselect it in Tools | Options | Downloads | Plug-ins. I think you can permanently remove it by deleting a file from a folder somewhere, but I don't know what or where exactly.
Other possibilities include the FlashBlock extension, or creating an AdBlock filter with something like "*.swf".

Macromedia have an UNINSTALLER which I downloaded "just in case;" I only took Shockwave plugin tonight, in fact! You don't like it? Hmm . . . I may end up uninstalling too. It's a 180k uninstaller exe available from the Macromedia site.
ADDENDUM: Here are the links; first is for Macromedia flash, and the 2nd one for Shockwave:

OK. Just used the uninstaller for Shockwave; removed 6.7MB of "stuff," and as I recall that's about how much was "missing" after the install. Removed the application data Folder under "Macromedia;" only "Flashplayer" is left. I don't know about "traces" here and there, but most of it is gone.
So I can attest for the uninstaller. Not wanting anything to do with I.E., I had "browsed" on install to Progams>Mozilla Firefox>PlugIns to install, and the uninstaller still found it.
