Completely removing the Babylon Toolbar extension

I must have downloaded something that had the Babylon Toolbar bundled with it. I think the culprit was FoxTab FLV Player but that is just a hunch and not entirely relevant. My problem is that even though I have attempted to completely purge my system of every and any reference to Babylon, it still shows up in the about:config. I have removed it using the "Uninstall a program" feature in Control Panel, made sure it did not exist in Firefox add-ons, deleted it from Program Files, cleaned every reference to it from Windows registry, ran Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and so forth. And yet this still shows up when I search about:config...

There is no Babylon anything in the extensions folder (C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\extensions) and nothing in Windows registry either. And I can right-click on all these and select "Reset" and then restart Firefox, but they persist and keep reappearing anyway. What am I missing? How do I completely rid my system of this malicious software?

About:config entries for extensions persist until you remove them. Right-click each one and select reset.

Menu > Help > Troubleshooting Info > click Open Containing Folder.

Close Firefox.

Open the pref.js file using a text editor and get rid of those entries.

Also make sure you don't have a user.js file, if you do open that up and look for those entries.

There have been reports of the Skype toolbar installing nasties with it so you might try disabling that and repeating.

The pref.js file was clean, but I found those entries in the users.js file. I deleted them, saved the file, reopened Firefox and checked about:config...

...and it was clean!

Awesome! I only knew to check there because I recently discovered an extension that did that same nasty trick... I saw a user.js file in a profile I *knew* I never made one for.

Hello Everybody.

Thanks for your help in getting rid of this nasty babylon.

I deleted in pref.js and in user.js and they don't appear in the about:config anymore.
On the first look I don't have anything of babylon toolbar left on firefox.
But if I type something in the Adress Bar it goes to Babylon.
Does anyone have the same problem?

Babylon toolbar and Incredibar toolbar

I had managed to disable it by resetting the values in Firefox About:config
and removing the toolbars with Spybot and Malwarebytes and the addon in
Firefox extensions but they stayed in about:config it wasn't until I read here
about pref.js and user.js and how to edit them that I was sure they
were really gone.

The Installer installed thetoolbars even when i chose not to accept them by
unclicking the little [x]

I removed the user file completely - only thing in it was the Babylon entries - and deleted every Babylon line from the prefs.js file. Now, no more Babylon extensions in the about:config. Thanks for this effective, but hard-to-find-on-the-web fix. (I searched many times and your post is the only one that seems to talk about how to actually remove the extensions. Good work!
