EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION_READ?

Post by qwiktune »

So when I try to run Mozilla Firefox (doesn't matter what version, but i'm on the newest I believe is like 10.0.2 or something) the browser will crash very often on almost any website. I've tried in safe mode disabling all my addons and extensions...etc but nothing. I noticed Google Chrome also crashes about as often, but I very rarely getting any crashes with Opera, so I have to use that because it the only one I can get to stay open. These browsers used to work perfectly fine and I think the only thing I did to this computer was installed a new graphics card, but its drivers are up to date (Its in ATI Radeon HD 5970). The reason for the crash is EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION_READ, but I dont know what that means. Below is the crash details tested on facebook.com. Let me know if there is any other information I can provide needed in order to fix this issue, its driving me nuts, thanks!

Since this problem is happening on all browsers it's not a Firefox issue. If you want to discuss the problem then you would need to register and interact within the other forum... but you have to register.

Just to see what I would get I searched Google for TI Radeon HD 5970 cause crash and reviewed some of the data... you might get closer to a resolution if you did some research there.
As you can see she's (The CAT) always alert and on the prowl for Meoware !!

I've done a good bit of research but I dont exactly know what i'm looking for....but its a graphic card related issue? I mean I've been through my Catalyst Control Center options and i've tried different things but I cant seem to fix it. The only issue's i've having are with Mozilla and Chrome, so yes its not only Mozilla, but maybe if I can find out whats the causing Mozilla is crashing it will fix my Chrome issue to. Are these browsers just not compatible with my graphics card?

Would probably be worth checking for an ATI driver update.

You can try disabling hardware acceleration in Firefox
options -> advanced -> general uncheck "use hardware acceleration"
but as mentioned since it happens in all browsers you should try to fix the root cause - if you already have the current driver, try doing a clean install of it. A few months ago I was getting a lot of crashes, mostly in Firefox (probably because that is the main program used) that I eventually found were because there were portions of 2 different versions of the graphics driver installed. Uninstalling the driver, temporarily booting with standard VGA only, and installing cleanly fixed everything.

I tried disabling hardware acceleration, no luck....

One thing to note is that is doesn't happen in OPERA, that is the browser I'm using to get on this website. I think IExplorer is ok as well. Its just Firefox and Chome that crash....theres only one version of my graphics card driver installed....any other ideas? Can anyone tell anything from the report, cause i'm not even sure how you read that ](*,)

Have you tried lowering your OS hardware acceleration settings? This is sometimes required with certain hardware problems:
http://www.pixelmetrics.com/Tips/VidBla ... ration.php

Note: versions of IE that run on XP are not hardware accelerated and I don't think Opera 11 is either.
Tip of the day: If it has "toolbar" in the name, it's crap.

Good suggestion but even when I turned it all the way to OFF it still crashed. Chrome crashes less frequent the Firefox crashes almost instantly...ahhh it driving me nuts! lol

Have you ever seen a Blue Screen Of Death from this? If so, I'm thinking you may actually have a problem with your memory.

Nope never a blue screen of death and nothing else crashes that I've noticed, just Firefox all the time and Chrome Frequently....this is a head scratcher. No virus's or maleware, i run Malwarebytes constantly along side AVG, comes up clean...

What about starting Firefox's safe mode while running Windows in safe mode?

Please try to create a new profile and don't install any addons:

I've run firefox in safe mode with no luck (everything disabled..etc) but i haven't tried it with Windows in safe mode cause I figured it wasn't a windows issue since I've had it working on this computer before. I think it was before I changed the video cards. Put in the ATI Radon HD 4600 Series I got from one of my other computer and now i'm having these issues. I can't confirm its 100% the fault of the graphics card but thats like the only thing I've changed. What would be the best to test the theory of it being caused by the graphics card? I mean the drivers are up to date..etc so if it was, how would I even fix it?
