I learn from Vijay Pande's blog [ http://folding.typepad.com/ ] that Stanford is rolling out Folding at Home "version 7" client. You may also notice this by visiting the project's home page [ http://folding.stanford.edu/ ] : the "download" direct link gets the new version, and the rest is now in an "older versions" page. Moreover, Vijay Pande writes about very promising science results, regarding cancer, Alzheimer, drug design and viral infection. So it seems we were not just wasting resources!

P.S. I am guessing that Peter_Baewald is a mis-spelling for Peter_Baerwald. I can combine statistics if required, although it does mean that my statistics will diverge from those at Stanford. I don't mind that as long as people are aware of it - I just don't want to be accused of "cooking the books"!!

P.P.S. Sorry about the lack of weekly statistics recently. Things have been manic here again and I decided that it wasn't worth posting statistics from several weeks ago. In any case, my blog has all of the weekly statistics if you want to see them.

I have tried unsuccessfully to find out the pros and cons of upgrading to the V.7 client, so I have postponed doing so. A few questions that I hope someone can either answer or point me to a link that does. I have two PCs, each of which I can (currently) use one CPU for folding. As a result, I am using the old CPU client on each. For the past 12-18 months, my folding has been very stable, reinforcing my reluctance.

    1. Are there any advantages to me to upgrade?
    2. Are there any advantages from the Project's standpoint for me to upgrade?
    3. Other than I am using an "obsolete" version, what--if any--are the disadvantages of continuing to use version 6.

I appreciate any feedback!

I don't believe v6 is considered obsolete ... yet. The only recommendation re v6 is that you use the latest version 6.34. That way you'll have access to a4 projects that currently come with a 10% bonus over and above the current Quick Return Bonus that you get by using a passkey.

http://folding.typepad.com/news/2012/07 ... oject.html

http://folding.stanford.edu/English/FAQ-passkey

There are a number of features in v7 that can improve throughput. One is that the next WU can be downloaded and ready for processing before you finish the current WU and start processing while the current WU is being uploaded. Another is that v7 clients(FAHClient) on different computers can communicate with FAHControl running on your main computer so that you can monitor and control the clients on all the computers being used without actually having to physically go to those other computers. Also, some projects are specifically set up to only run on v7 so you'll never get them if you're using v6. That may not always be a bad thing if the projects using v6 produce more than the current v7-only projects but it could be the other way around.

My know-how on folding is a billionth of bollix47's. Anyway, I can tell you I use a three-year-old dual-core desktop with Windows 7. I changed F@H 6 to F@H 7 four months ago, and got more points than before. And let us suppose more points are better for science. I am satisfied with F@H 7. No delays, no WU corruption. I only quit it when installing a large program or performing any other heavy CPU task.

By the way, if F@H 7 were very harmful, would it be the default download?
