How Can I Open Incomplete RAR Files

Post by sprateep »

HI,
One of the folder contains pdf files, videos and other folders.
Once I trided to compress through RAR with password & Encrypted file names.
Its total file size is 8 GB.
Location of all files are in External Hard Disk.
Started compressing then due to it’s taking a long time I cancelled it after just 5 minutes.
All the original files (Folders, videos and pdf) turned to Green color.
Now I am not able to copy/cut/open any files.
Remember this is not Archived files. These are Original files.
When ever I am trying to open it showing that Access is denied. But the files are not in rar format. All files are in original format.
These are all my technical personal files. Please anybody can help me out?

Hello,

The Store compression method is fastest. The files are not actually compressed in this case, so it's useful when disk space is not a concern.

In Windows Explorer, green files are encrypted.

That suggests the files were encrypted with another Windows user account's credentials.

I can't imagine what went wrong. WinRAR shouldn't modify the original files in any way. The encrypted file names option means when opening the archive you must supply the password before being able to see the file list. When cancelling an archiving operation, the incomplete archive should simply disappear.

So why title this thread, “How Can I Open Incomplete RAR Files”?

If you really do have an incomplete RAR archive somewhere, you should be able to open it normally, although you will receive an error message. When extracting, you can choose "Keep broken files" to extract as much as possible.

  1. To decrypt an encrypted file, right-click it in Windows Explorer and choose Properties.
  2. In the Properties window, click the General tab, then the Advanced button.
  3. In the Advanced Attributes window, uncheck “Encrypt contents to secure data”, then click OK.
  4. Click OK to close the Properties window.
The above requires you to be logged in to the Windows account that encrypted the file in question. To find out which account that is, click the Details button next to “Encrypt contents to secure data”.

Otherwise, try your luck with the Unlocker program suggested above.

Kevin,
There's no need to reply to a thread that died in 2012.
