pop3 errors
I have same problem. I can send but not receive (download) email w/ tbird. I get following error when trying to "get mail" (sending of password did not succeed. Mailserver xxxx.org responded:) This would lead one to believe that I was using the wrong password, but I'm not. This has been going on for weeks. Remember I can use this same mailserver to send email and it asks for my password before it lets me send email and it accepts the same one it seems to reject when I want to download email. I have another tbird profile with a different server that works fine. I have Mozilla 1.7.5 and its email works fine with this mailserver and password & username. So does old Netscape 4.8.
I imported settings from Mozilla 1.7.5 and error as above. I uninstalled and setup by hand this profile and error as above. I created a second profile for this server since 1st one was the default, same error as above.
This has been going on since tbird 0.9.
I set up the logging and have a log file, but what to do with it.
There are many other postings with this same problem. Help! Somebody!!

There's a known bug that matches your log above when using this combination: Thunderbird 0.8 and higher, Ipswitch mail servers, and Norton Antivirus.
Are you using Norton? If so, try disabling it and see what happens.
More info on antivirus compatibility here:

I'm not using any Norton product. My antiirus software is Computer Associates eTrust Antivirus ver. 6.4.0.4 Engine Ver. 11.7.0.0. This is used along with MSFT default firewall in Win XP SP2. Not using the eTrust firewall anymore since many sites would not render properly with any browser. (IE 6, Netscape 7.1, Firefox 1.0, Mozilla 1.7.5)
I disabled my eTrust antivirus and was able to retrieve my email from this server. I won't be using Tbird unless this is fixed in some way. Mozilla 1.7.5 works with this combo.
I visited the antivirus compatibility page as above:
http://kb.mozillazine.org/Thunderbird_: ... s_Software
and it says that eTrust 6.2 is compatible. My ver. 6.4 wasn't compatable with Tbird 0.9 either.
I'll keep looking for Tbird updates periodically. I'm sure this will be solved soon.
Thank you quanxi for your knowledgable response. - hirochi

Hirochi,
You can use Thunderbird 0.7.3 and successfully get your mail.
You can find it here:
ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/t ... -0.7.3.exe
My ISP uses IMail also. I"m still waiting for this bug to be fixed.
Good luck,
Bob
P.S.
If anyone has an ISP using a version of IMail server greater than 8.12, are you seeing the same problem? Ipswitch has released version 8.15.
You can telnet to the pop server port 110 to see the version number, e.g.,
telnet pop.xyz.com 110
(enter quit to exit)
Thanks,
Bob

hirochi,
On a Windows operating system, telnet is a DOS command that comes with the OS. You will first need to open a Command Prompt window (on older systems, it is called MS-DOS Prompt). On Win XP, you would find it at All Programs / Accessories / Command Prompt. Once the Command Prompt window is open, you should see a prompt that looks something like C:\Documents and Settings\hirochi>
At that prompt, type the telnet command with its parameters. To get help, type telnet /?
For the IMail server telnet command, it would be:
telnet pop.xyz.com 110
(substitute your pop mail server info as appropriate).
When you are finished with Command Prompt window, you can type exit to close the window.
Also, I noticed you wrote in a previous post:
"This is used along with MSFT default firewall in Win XP SP2. Not using the eTrust firewall anymore since many sites would not render properly with any browser."
From what I have read, you should use only one firewall at a time. In this case, use only Windows firewall or the eTrust firewall, but not both at the same time.

I'm having the same problem, I've been using Mozilla mail until yesterday, when this error message popped up, at first I thought it was to do with the settings but they seem fine. I tried Thunderbird to see if it was simply a bug, but I've got the same issue with Thunderbird. I'm afraid I don't have the technical capability to supply a log (read the troubleshooting section and it might as well have been written in Latin). This problem only arose yesterday, I'd been using the e-mail system very happily unitl then.
Can you offer any advice?
