IMAP settings for outlook.com

Post by matrunner »

Hi

how to configure IMAP settings for outlook.com in TB.

It connects on only by pop3 format. But i need iMAP.

How to manually config if no auto config avail.

http://help.outlook.com/en-ca/140/cc875899.aspx that say it supports IMAP (with Thunderbird) but it doesnt give details how to use IMAP. Video is also not helping.

Kindly give me a solution. POP3 basis of Email is waste. Need to use in IMAP format

Outlook.com does not include IMAP support, the help article you linked to is for the Outlook Web App which is part of Office 365.

Hotmail does not support IMAP either.

There are workarounds such as linking the Hotmail email account to a Gmail email account using PoP3, and then use Gmail's IMAP support. This should also work for Outlook.com

Ah,
Outlook.com will support IMAP, but this will be a future update. Currently it supports only AES (Exchange Active Sync), but because IMAP allows access to the mail contents via the APIs then this will be included at a later date ....

Actually, outlook.com finally changed their outlook http://forums.mozillazine.org/posting.php?mode=reply&f=39&t=2510873&sid=417f0cdbf3b2d8c1033df6d9dac6f61b# on things... go to http://www.howto-outlook.com/news/outlookcom-imap.htm to get the imap settings required for the outlook.com email.

Thanks for posting that, but the first link seems to be bad. Notice that its neither underlined or displayed in blue by the forum.

http://kb.mozillazine.org/Hotmail describes how to create a IMAP account for Outlook. There was a comment in viewtopic.php?f=37&t=2748569 that it was dirt slow but I have no performance problems with it.

I am posting this question, rather than just trying it, to avoid any email loss or corruption and having to apply a restore from my backup.

1. To convert an account in TB from POP3 to IMAP, do I just create a new account with the IMAP settings and remove the POP3 account?

2. What happens to all the mail in my Local Folders, e.g., untouched?

3. Do I have to "move" emails in a Local Folder to a new folder under the IMAP account for them to be uploaded to the server?

4. Is there a limit on the number or size of emails that outlook.com will maintain (I have a few thousand emails in one account)?

1. That is the safest way. Move any messages (in the POP accounts folders) you want to save to Local Folders beforehand.
2. Yes.
3. Yes. Moving them to a folder in a IMAP account uploads them. It can be an existing or a new folder in the IMAP account.
4. Supposedly Outlook.com provides 5GB of space and will gradually increase that over time. There is a lot of hype in some articles about that providing virtually unlimited space but how fast and how much it really increases the mailbox size is unknown. If you need more space you can upgrade to a $19.95 a year version of Outlook.com that will increase the mailbox to 10GB. http://www.outlook-apps.com/maximum-email-size/ has contradictory statements on the maximum size of a message. I'd assume you can have messages that are up to 20MB (its really a limit on the size of the attachment), and the only limit on the number of messages is the total size of the mailbox. Supposedly you can send messages up to 300MB if they use SkyDrive to store the file for the attachment. Its not clear that the SkyDrive integration lets you accept larger messages sent from a different email provider. I'm not aware of any way to use the Skydrive integration from Thundebrird, that appears to be webmail specific.

I suggest you consider it a 5GB mailbox that "might" increase its size later on. Microsoft has a poor track record in running its hotmail mail servers, I'm skeptical that a new web site and IMAP support will change that much.
