It's 9.0c (4.09.0000.0904).
@ The Daum Pot Player (my new fave) requires a later version, during install there was a 'warning' that some features wouldn't work with the existing one.

Actually there were many versions of DX 9.0c, the first one released in 2004 and the last one in 2010.

To make it simple you should:

- install DX 9.0c (Feb 2010)
- install the two unofficial updates (975560-v2 & 2631813) from here.

For anyone interested:

I have finally managed to sort and upload all M$ official updates to an alternative server!

Windows 2000 Archive

There are 8210 / 10.2 GB files related to official updates there. The updates are available to download in all languages including versions for Japanese NEC98 which cannot be normally downloaded from M$ official servers any more.

I think I also haven't mentioned it yet but a new version v10c of UURollup is also ready and available to download.

I just followed all the steps in Post #1.

Firefox 16 gives me - firefox.exe is not a valid win32 application.

FAIL. Any ideas?

I am posting this from my backup copy of ff12 that I made as in post 1. Do I need to uninstall ff16 somehow? Or can I just overwrite the now current (but unworking) firefox directory with my backup copy from ff12?

Followup to above post: I uninstalled FF16 using Add/Remove Programs.
Then I just renamed my copy of ff12 dir back to original name. FF12 works fine.

I downloaded ff13.x (0.1?) - and installed it.
Same error. Not a valid win32 app.

I am copying the uxtheme.dll from the known dll wrapper (KDW) into the firefox directory. I am not, however doing anything with the other files in the KDW.

Do I need to install the KDW? I was under the impression that the files necessary from it were included in Update Rollup 2.

Another update to the 2posts above: I failed to install UURollup. Then, I did that - v10c.
I had Avira Antivirus running - it hit upon 3 files. shell32.dll, update.sys, user32.dll
I ignored them. Rebooted.
Black Screen. Windows couldn't start. Of course I didn't update my ERD prior to this. I dug out the W2K disc, ran a repair - let it repair ntdetect.com and ntldr
Rebooted again and it took awhile for my desktop to show back up - but its here now and Im back in ff12. System seems a bit sluggish.

Is there a way to rollback the UURollup?

I did make a backup of my registry prior to any of this. I'm afraid if I import that with the UURollup active it'll go really haywire.

Thoughts? Advice?

UURollup is the most essential part of these instructions. You can't run applications compiled with VS 2010 without the unofficial kernel which is included in it. What do you mean by "I had Avira Antivirus running - it hit upon 3 files"? Did your AV prevent these files from being replaced? If yes then it's no surprise the system was broken after reboot. You should let the installer do everything it wants to do. It may be better to just disable the AV before starting the installation.

I dug out the W2K disc, ran a repair - let it repair ntdetect.com and ntldr

These two files actually are completely unrelated to the problem. UURollup installs the Windows 2003 Server versions of them and the repair installation just replaced them with the original Win2k versions together with all the other system files. That's why you were able to boot the system again (but don't leave it in this condition because it's still broken as UURollup installed also several newer files which are still present in your system at the moment).

Is there a way to rollback the UURollup?

UURollup uses M$ hotfix installer which is unfortunately very limited. If there was an error during the installation and it closed / rebooted then you can't do anything about it (= it's impossible to rollback). What I would advise you to do now is to install UURollup again over the existing installation. It will install all the files and the registry entries once again. Your system should be fixed after doing that.

I'd also recommend to switch off the AV this time.

Thanks for the reply Tomasz!

Yes, I figured it was still broken at this point. Right now - I'm going to put off reinstalling UURollup for a couple of days as I have some work to be done. After that, I'm going to update my ERD just in case. Then, I'll rerun the install with AV turned off.

I dont think the AV prevented the installation of the 3 files. I told it to ignore it, but that was on the 3rd file alarm, so it may have quarantined the first two prior to me hitting ignore.

Upon the successful reboot, it did alarm on the shell32.dll - and I successfully ignored it and created an exclusion for the 3 files in question.

I should mention that at some point years ago I did have this machine setup to dual boot Win2k/XP and the XP install got corrupted. I never repaired that. The corrupted install is still lying on a partition (or was until earlier) I haven't looked at the drive contents or the boot.ini yet. I do know that it disappeared from my OS Boot menu selections at startup.

Thanks again for the efforts to support Windows 2000! Love it.

No problem. I myself always make a backup copy of the system partition using Clonezilla (also included in Parted Magic which itself is probably more user friendly). The partition is only 10GB so saving a full image of it takes ~10 minutes and in case something has got broken I can restore it in just ~5 minutes.

Upon the successful reboot, it did alarm on the shell32.dll - and I successfully ignored it and created an exclusion for the 3 files in question.

Most of the files installed by UURollup replace the system files immediately or (if in use) after reboot. However, there are several files which MUST be replaced before reboot, and the three mentioned belong to them.

I should mention that at some point years ago I did have this machine setup to dual boot Win2k/XP and the XP install got corrupted. I never repaired that.

This shouldn't really matter. Actually, there was an issue in UURollup-v10b when the installation crashed when there was no "%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\..\Default User" folder present. The folder is normally always present unless Windows have been installed on the exactly same system partition twice. In such a case the folder would become "%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\..\Default User.NT" or similar. Anyway, this is no longer valid in UURollup-v10c.

Thanks again for the efforts to support Windows 2000! Love it.

Thank you :) UURollup-v11 is coming slowly and there are a lot of changes in it, the most important being a switch from the WildBill's kernel to the BlackWingCat's kernel. The latter is much more advanced. It doesn't only add new APIs / files from XP but in fact extends it. Apart from being able to use a lot (most?) of XP only applications, .NET Framework 4.0, etc. it also allows running programs compiled in Visual Studio 2012. It's possible because BlackWingCat has added several Vista only APIs to it.

The current stage of UURollup-v11 development is being reported in details in the main MSFN topic about USP5.2. At the moment it has already moved to the weekly stage (weekly can be seen as similar to RC). The planned release date of the stable version is 28th Oct 2012.

I've got good news.

With the upcoming new version of UURollup it will no longer be necessary to switch off Hardware Acceleration any more because it just seems to work thanks to BWC kernel. It will also be no longer required to manually copy BlackWingCat's uxtheme.dll to the Firefox folder as uxtheme.dll now will be automatically placed in your %windir%\system32 folder. More then than that, it will be also possible to install Firefox in Win2k normally without having to add anything to the registry by yourself.

Thanks tomasz, finally got around to it, I already had the 'latest' version installed.
As for the updates I think I'll pass, if there is a problem, messing with serious Windows stuff isn't my thing.

Great work, OP! :!:

Anyway, when come to the latest Flash using, then there is a problem and also a quick fix to make it work on W2k :)
Just open the Adobe installer (exe, not msi version) into some hexa editor like HxD or XVI32 and change text string SetDllDirectoryW to GetModuleHandleW and - voila! - flash install work :)

Or just grab the unpacked DLLs here:
http://rapidshare.com/files/3122942562/ ... %20W2k.zip
http://depositfiles.org/files/max4wif3c
http://www.sendspace.com/file/z2t9j2
Archive contain Adobe Flash unpacked (ready to copy into Firefox) with their utility files hacked for W2k in these versions: Flash Player 9.0.124.0, Flash Player 10.0.32.18, Flash Player 10.1.85.3, Flash Player 10.1.102.64, Flash Player 10.2.159.1, Flash Player 10.3.183.29, Flash Player 11.2.202.235, Flash Player 11.3.300.273, Flash Player 11.4.402.287 :)

messing with serious Windows stuff isn't my thing

Don't be such a <snip>! I tweak window sizes, remove images, replace by my images and reduce size of files in windows system32 directory w/o any problems. It is just like a lego for adults
I edited even the shell32.dll and quess what - noproblemo  If you know what you are doing, then it is all good and W2k is the best tweakable system ever.
Funny thing - they are far, far more reliable that XP. Even I disabled all the bad services and did all the tweaks, my friend still by browsing on porno sites get XP down to their knees in about a week or so. (HW firewall, using Firefox, IE _REMOVED_ from the system - thx to Fred Vorks work!) W2k, OTOH, last 3 years till the HDD give up... So, don't be fooled. When I read freibooter remark about being "rather reckless" by using W2k, I almost fell off the chail by laughing at this sheer nonsense.

And don't get me wrong. I was using many other operation systems. Amiga OS I liked much, Mac OS was great up to 7.5.3 (7.6.x started going wrong and Mac OC X just lock you in your own machine like in jail, you can't do anything except what the OS allow you - no WAY for me, I did not like being jailed at all) and OTOH Vista is the most <snip>. Where Win7 is just light Vista & slightly less clutter. Win8 just add more bells and whistles, no point of ever trying when Win7 works well, except they are slower that W2k :)

I also wonder, if the more recent Firefox interface could be set to look like this:
Image
 If not, then there is no way in hell I will upgrade :? Perhaps to the 3.6.28 if I must, but that it is. Clean, simple, spacy interface is all I want and I going to get it, even if I need to Resource Hack everything in the OS

And I do hack my OS:

Can you do that?
