"Wrong Site": Add Security Exception?

Post by raywood »

I'm using Thunderbird in Windows 7. A dialog pops up with this information:

Add Security Exception

You are about to override how Thunderbird identifies this site.
Legitimate banks, stores, and other public sites will not ask you to do this.

Server
Location: pop3.live.com:995

Certificate Status
This site attempts to identify itself with invalid information.

Wrong Site
Certificate belongs to a different site, which could indicate an identity theft.

A search yields nothing exactly on point. See http://www.google.com/search?num=50&hl=en&newwindow=1&client=firefox-a&hs=P3D&rls=org.mozilla%3Aen-US%3Aofficial&q=%22Add+Security+Exception%22+Thunderbird+%22pop3.live.com%3A995%22&tbs=qdr%3A&aq=f&aqi=&aql=&oq=

I need to get into T-bird, and I believe I've clicked on Confirm Security Exception in the past. Have I been right in doing so? It seems odd that Hotmail would still turn up a message like this.

I have a Hotmail POP account in Thunderbird and have never had to create a security exception for it. I can't find any similar threads.

No idea, if your settings are correct. That's why I posted the link to the Hotmail KB article.

Are you using Thunderbird 3.1.11 or 5.0? If the former it can't hurt to upgrade using the help menu in case there some weird configuration specific bug that effects this was fixed. I'm using 3.1.11, 5.0 and 7.0alpha with the same profile and don't have this problem so I'd assume the problem is somehow specific to your system.

I'm using 3.1.11. I'll try the upgrade.

Any chance this would be due to spyware?

Doubt it. Are you using a normal Hotmail account you got from signing up on their web site or is it one provided by your ISP?

The former. I've had it for years. Signed up at Hotmail.com.

I just looked at the certificates in Thunderbird. I went into Tools > Account Settings > Hotmail > Security > View Certificates. The entry for this one says "Microsoft Secure Server Authority." The address is debug-pop3.live.com. The server is pop3.live.com:995. A search doesn't turn up much for this. See http://www.google.com/search?num=50&hl= ... =&aql=&oq=

This site says 995 is the default port: http://www.develcat.com/2011/03/access- ... a-firefox/

Another search seems to indicate that port 995 is OK: http://www.google.com/search?num=50&hl= ... =&aql=&oq=

I don't have any entries for Hotmail when viewing certificates. I wouldn't expect a SSL certificate to be listed, they're normally not stored permanently.

Perhaps you need to delete the certificate for debug-pop3.live.com. That might be confusing Thunderbird. What tab is it listed under? The only tab that I have any entries under is authorities.

OK. Deleted the certificate. Seems to be working OK so far. Thanks!

Spoke too soon. The problem has been continuing. Any ideas?

One possibility: I am using Thunderbird 3.1.14, and the webpage on configuring Hotmail (http://support.mozillamessaging.com/en- ... nd-hotmail) tells me to uncheck the "Use Secure Authentication" option. I don't see that option. Is it hiding somewhere?
