Thunderbird also with Port Blocked

Post by guerrez »

Hi all,

I would like to use Thunderbird in the company where I work, but it cannot connect because the ports that uses are blocked. Surfing internet is allowed (so Port 80 I think).

Could I use Thunderbird through the Port 80?

Thank you!

Doubtful. Ask the folks who handle the email server at work what port you should use.

They told me that for users is open only the port for surfing internet. I was thinking if it is possible to connect to a server that use the 80 port.

Unless the email server is also using the same port, which is unlikely and would be a novel headache, the answer is no. Surfing the internet is different from email. You might want to tell them you would like to use an email client like Thunderbird and not web mail.

My main email provider (www.fastmail.fm) has a special proxy system whereby you can access each service (POP, IMAP, SMTP, etc) through any port number, if you use certain server names. That's unusual, every other email provider that I know of only supports standard, protocol specific ports.

I suspect your admins configured their firewall to block access to the Internet except for browsing. If you are trying to use Thunderbird to access a mail server on the companies local network, that shouldn't effect you.

Correct. Gmail uses port 993 (IMAP) or 995 (POP).

If your trying to access the Gmail service you can try the TB's Webmail add-on with it gmail extension. It bypasses the the usual email ports by using using localhost and downloads and uploads email via the internet gmail webmail site. It has been used several years to get around corporate firewalls.

Note some operating systems requires port numbers above 1024 too

Hallo,
as my office blocks email ports but allows 443 via cooperated proxy for https traffic analysis I'm wondering if i could setup a proxy server on my NAS to make Thunderbird to connect to this proxy via https before trying to connect to email provider via email port?
I found many proxy help on: How to bypass web URL filtering service to access blocked websites (proxy) [closed] but a lot of it is outdated.

btw TB's Webmail add-on isn't maintained anymore
