SOme youtube videos do not play. (others do).

Post by esbo »

recenlty some youtube videos do not play on firefox but will play in chrome and IE.
I have tried seemingly everything, ie disabling add-ons and going back to prevsious versions of flash player and also
up grading real player.

The whole thing seems like a real crock of **** to be honest.

Firefox is every thing is it supposed to be, it is no longer the solution but one big horrible problem.

Must have been real hard work to get some videos to play but no others.

All I see is a black box where the video should be, I note that if I right click on the black box it is as if it is not a video, ie
I do not get a menu saying copy video url or showing the adobe version

If I right click ad chose view selection source I get

<div style="overflow: hidden;" id="watch7-player" class="html5-player player-root">
<div id="video-player" class="html5-video-player" style="display: none;" tabindex="-1">
<style class="html5-viewport-sheet" disabled="true">
@-o-viewport { width: device-width; }
@-moz-viewport { width: device-width; }
@-ms-viewport { width: device-width; }
@-webkit-viewport { width: device-width; }
@viewport { width: device-width; }
</style>

<div class="html5-video-fallback html5-stop-propagation" style="display: none;">
<div class="html5-video-fallback-content">
This video is currently unavailable.
</div>
</div>

If that is any help.

What gets me is how it can take a company 20 years to figure out how to play a video, I mean basically you just display each frame and that's it, not rocket science is it?

Yes I can play it, as in it plays, however I note I have no control over it, I can't pause, or go full screen, not least because there is no control bar at the bottom.
If I right click on the video noting happens, it is 'dead to the mouse', ie no control whatsoever.
However if I right click in chrome I get a menu as follows : play mute loop, show controls, save video, copy vide.....etc...

So there is some problem there with firefox.

No, I believe the HTML5 standard is still being developed, so how the people working on it implement controls is totaly up to them. For certain applications there may be no controls at all.
Some info here > http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HTML5_video
And here on implementation in web pages > http://www.w3schools.com/html/html5_video.asp

I am not sure I understand, I am not implementing it, I am just watching video so it should work and I should have control.

anything else is ridiculous.

Further more this is a recent problem, it is not due to some recent development, these are old videos which are not playing so
I shoudl still be able to play them.

The question is what has changed? Chrome can play the videos so there is no excuse for firefox not playing them.

I have gone back to firefox 15 and that will not play it either I have also go back a version of that heap of **** called adobe.
I am on 10.3 IIRC but none of these changes have cured the problem.

On Youtube if you opt in the html5 trial the videos will play with html5 player and if not available for that video, the video should play with Flash plugin.
http://www.youtube.com/html5

Try turning off Hardware Acceleration in Firefox as your computer setup may not have compatible hardware/drivers.
"Firefox menu -> Tools -> Options -> Advanced -> General" and uncheck "Use Hardware Acceleration when available"

As you may not be aware, IE uses a ActiveX version of Flash and Chrome kind of cheats by coming with its own Flash and can use the normal Flash plugin that Firefox uses if you disable the one in Chrome.

Yes so why does firefox persist in using the pile of **** which is flash player, surely if it far easier to write you own player and you the pile of **** called 'flash'?

Finally a solution!!

I might have know youtube had a hand to play in this murky saga, it seems it opted me into this
trial with informing me, thanks you tube!!

That is not the first pile of youtube has dumped on me recently, for some reason it has chose to to remove
a number of facilities from it's site such as the obviously extremely useful 'browse' (videos) button, and extremely useful
button on a video browsing site, making it about as useful as a one legged man in a arse kicking competition.

I followed this thread. It has had a fruitful conclusion. So any useless fight that occurs from here on in does not get in the way of the main topic.

esbo, I think that a huge "thank you and sorry" is in order to the people that offered advice without any judgment of your aggressive behaviour and bad language. You came here and very rudely attacked FF, then kept attacking. in the end the fault was YT, and you attacked YT.

I do not feel that coming in swinging at FF is a fair way to get help. Going on to other posts that keep hitting is even worse. Finding out it's something else is fine. Not your fault. Hitting out at _that_ is ....mmmm...fine.

But at least say thank you and apologise to the great people here who help many people and worked around your rude, aggressive behaviour and helped _you_. They deserve AT LEAST that. Goodness gracious!

You are wrong on both counts. It isn't a Firefox or YouTube problem. It's a conflict between Real Player and Flash:

Oh OK just visiting this thread after a long absence, I apologise for any bad language, I don't recall using anything too out of order.
I also apologise for blaming firebox, however the fact does remain the issue is not manifest in Chrome.

Firefox does seem to be running a lot better recently, it used to an absolute age to start up, not sure if an update was done or if I tweaked
something.

I find youtube has changed for the worse but that's another story :)

Anyhow it seem the problem was actually Flash, possible something that deserves a good slagging off, just about the worse piece of software
I have come across. I very rarely install updates for it now, I am just happy to have a version which seems stable.
I don't care if it is a security flaw without the updates, a hacker could hardly install a a more problematic piece of software the Flash!!!
