Big change here with Nightly updates "speed" - the 2013-01-16 update was lightning fast in comparison to previous weeks. And it seemed to be a lot larger @5.1 MB than updates over the past few weeks, but I doubt if that had anything to do with the quickness. Both the time it sat "applying update" and the restart were both a lot faster.
The only thing different at my end is that I did a WinXP restart earlier this morning, I run this box 24/7 and only restart Windows like every 4 to 8 months, as needed by other software or with hardware maintenance needs.

A mind is a terrible thing to waste. Mine has wandered off and I'm out looking for it.

Still slow for me, and this machine is shut down every night. Must be something in my setup, have to try with a clean profile tomorrow. Maybe a clean install, if that doesn't help.

Is anyone else running PC Tools Firewall Plus alongside Microsoft Security Essentials? I noticed my firewall had a rule for the updater when I mistakenly clicked "deny". Maybe MSE is not the only program locking the Mozilla exe's.

Re: "Applying update" taking a very long time...
I wouldn't think a firewall would affect the install time, only the download...but I could be wrong.
Anyway, tried with a clean profile and it was much faster. Could be coincidence; I'll find out tomorrow. Could do it over with my regular profile, but already running late so I won't.

I find it takes no longer than Chrome updating (which is very slow). What bugs me is when it applies updates and still brings up the Aurora Update dialog at restart.

Verified that it's still slow - takes about 2 minutes - to apply update when using my regular profile.
