0.6.1 candidate builds available

Post by asa »

Today we have 0.6.1 milestone candidate builds which have fixes for the four problems listed in the <a href="http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?t=16653">previous 0.6.1 thread</a>:
<a title="Profile Manager does not see/use/remember existing profiles that are not the default / only uses default or default user profile" href="http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=211860">211860</a> (Profile Manager does not see/use/remember existing profiles that are
not the default / only uses default or default user profile),
<a title="[FIX]back button not using cached pages (when page headers say not to cache)" href="http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=209242">209242</a> ([FIX]back button not using cached pages (when page headers say not to cache),
<a title="Form Autocomplete not working in Firebird 0705 onwards" href="http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=212220">212220</a> (Form Autocomplete not working in Firebird 0705 onwards), and
<a title="Popup Whitelist is not displaying sites from cookperm.txt in listbox" href="http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=212523">212523</a> (Popup Whitelist is not displaying sites from cookperm.txt in listbox).

We need lots of testing on these builds to make sure that the patches merged and are working correctly on the branch. If you've got some time and you want to see 0.6.1 be a succeess, please grab a build for windows or linux and use it for a day or two, reporting any problems back to this thread.

<a href="http://komodo.mozilla.org/pub/firebird/nightly/latest-1.5a/MozillaFirebird-win32.zip">Windows build</a>
<a href="http://komodo.mozilla.org/pub/firebird/nightly/latest-1.5a/MozillaFirebird-i686-pc-linux-gnu.tar.gz">Linux build</a>

Grab a build, visit some sites you don't normally visit, test various webmails and shopping sites (like yahoo mail, hotmail, amazon.com, etc.,) set some preferences you don't normally change, open windows instead of tabs, etc. Just bang on the thing hard to help us shake out any problems that make this build worse than the previous release. Thanks for your help in testing Firebird!

<strong>Update:</strong> We just took two more fixes and will be making another round of candidate builds shortly. The fixes are for bug <a href="http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=212686">212686</a>, "Arrowing into form autocomplete dropdown updates autocomplete (often making the dropdown disappear)" and bug <a href="http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=206780">206780</a>, "Can't set many non-Western fonts (need port from xpfe)".

<strong>Update:</strong> And here they are: <a href="http://komodo.mozilla.org/pub/firebird/nightly/2003-07-26-12-1.5a/MozillaFirebird-win32.zip">Windows</a> and <a href="http://komodo.mozilla.org/pub/firebird/nightly/2003-07-26-01-1.5a/MozillaFirebird-i686-pc-linux-gnu.tar.gz">Linux</a>.

<strong>Update 2003-07-27 21:23</strong>: One more round of builds. This one's got new application icons. I think that's all that's changed. If nothing new and horrible turns up here then these builds should be 0.6.1.
<a href="http://komodo.mozilla.org/pub/firebird/nightly/2003-07-27-16-1.5a/MozillaFirebird-win32.zip">for Windows</a> and <a href="http://komodo.mozilla.org/pub/firebird/nightly/2003-07-27-02-1.5a/MozillaFirebird-i686-pc-linux-gnu.tar.gz">for Linux</a>.

0.6 doesn't have built in autoscroll. what about 0.6.1 ? if autoscroll is built in i'm not going to test it ;)
by the way: you just seem to have fixed bugs that appeared in new builts AFTER 0.6 ?!
so why should 0.6-users update to 0.6.1 ? any other fixes ?

Some GUI issues (not critical) :

* Help - About Mozilla Firebird : Shows version 0.6, should be 0.6.1

* The textarea's on MozillaZine (to log into the forum and the ones used to make this reply) seem to have a missing dark border on the top, therefor b0rking the 3D effect.

Nice to see you're so interested in making Firebird successful. It's great to have people with such a wonderful attitude on board and helping out.

I think you're confused because that statement and that question don't really make sense.

You seem to not understand how our development process works. Firebird shares the Mozilla Gecko codebase. All of the rendering and networking code (and more) are being developed right along with the various front ends. There were literally about 80,000 lines of code changed in the core since Firebird 0.6 was released. So, yes, there are hundreds, if not thousands of fixed bugs that existed prior to the release of 0.6. There were also lots of Firebird specific bugs fixed between 0.6 and 0.6.1. Then in the last few days, we've taken a small handful of <strong>additional</strong> fixes that are specifically regressions since 0.6 - things that would make 0.6.1 worse than 0.6.

But it seems like you're missing the point of this release which is explicitely to fix a handful of bugs that existed <strong>in 0.6</strong> like the autocomplete crasher and the DOM security issue that broke a lot of bookmarks.

I'm experiencing a crash if I close the browser with more than one tab open.

Application Data\Phoenix deleted
New profile created
No extensions installed

Run Firebird
CTRL + T for new tab
Close browser
Confirmation dialogue ("you have 2 tabs open do you still want to close" or similar) appears
Browser window disappears, Talkbalk window pops up, confirmation dialogue remains

Telling it not to ask again has no effect next time round.

Win32 version of this build.

<b>EDIT
After some messing about, I think this is an issue with TBE, possibly TBE and Download Statusbar and as such isn't really a problem with this build. Sorry for the confusion</b>

It doesn't crash on me when I close the browser with more than one tab open (running WinXP Pro SP1 on P4). I see the same behavior when I run the Linux build (Debian sid on Athlon).

FWIW, I don't think it does, no. but I could be wrong

Yes, all the stuff that happened on the trunk between 20030516 and 20030711. That list is the stuff that was broken in that period and has been fixed since 2003-07-11, so the fixes were applied to the branched version to make this 0.6.1.

because of the cache-bug i stopped updating to the latest nightly binaries.

You need to update your signature too - that cache bug you were campaigning about is now fixed in the latest nightlies, as well as 0.6.1. Oh, and you can tell your brother that it's fixed too...

Well, the way you phrased it, you can't be faulted either way ... I'll need to remember that technique for future reference :-)

fwiw, I'm running 061rc sans extensions and the built-in auto-scroll is still present...

well i used phoenix, later on firebird 0.6 (milestone); then there was a time when i updated to every nightly build that came out. that was when many problems started (for me). features were added without possibility to deactivate them like for example autoscroll. i just hate this feature, that's why i asked. i don't think i have to test a version that i would hate because of the built in autoscroll (that wouldn't help you because i would only post that i hate it ;)). there were also other problems i had using the nightly builds (-> crashes) that's why i switched back to the milestone.
But it seems like you're missing the point of this release which is explicitely to fix a handful of bugs that existed <strong>in 0.6</strong> like the autocomplete crasher and the DOM security issue that broke a lot of bookmarks.

hmm "my" milestone never crashed that's why i asked what would be the advantages to update to 0.6.1. i understand that many bugs are fixed from one milestone to another, but i didn't have major problems using 0.6 so far and new versions just had built in features and bugs which i didn't like. that's why i was so sceptical about 0.6.1. if features like autoscroll can be turned off in 0.6.1 i'm going to switch to 0.6.1 right now :)

edit: just have to add a couple of thoughts:
asa wrote:Nice to see you're so interested in making Firebird successful.

there are actually a lot of people that switched to firebird because i recommended it. i'm sorry, that i'm not willing to test every version that is published. i just have to have a reliable, secure, stable, small, ... browser on my harddisc and for me 0.6 is such a browser. just because i refuse to test a version with built in autoscroll doesn't mean that i'm not thankfull for the work you do to create a better version of firebird !
