Well, in my case, it changes to the Link-Select anicursor which, on my system is a hollowed, color-changing arrowhead. But, it doesn't matter since I'm not a precision-guided surfer but, rather a "ready-click-aim" type. In addition, the middle button is a scroll-wheel so autoscroll also gets enabled when I inadvertently apply a bit too much pressure to the wheel.
So, yes, it's a real pain.
Lastly, I wasn't arguing for its removal, only the ability to disable it.
